Must have been a politician or lawyer that came up with that work around! LOL I don't think that is what Columbus meant or wanted but they certainly did a beautiful job with his resting place. The statues are so detailed and large - the details on the clothing is so clear and amazing!
I had read that Columbus' remains were in the Dominican Republic, too, and thought that would make for an interesting vacation destination. Now I am wondering...who is right?!
I'm thinking that is not what he wanted either but it is a gorgeous and unique way to be buried. The four statues are incredible and almost look life like. The details in the clothing is what I noticed first. You have again captured the tomb perfectly in the photo. I'm so in awe. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Christopher died in Spain but did not want to be buried in Spain. He was emphatic that he did not want to be buried in Spanish soil. After his death, Spain wanted to keep his body in the country, but didn't want to defy Columbus' wishes.
In order to keep Columbus' body in Spain, but not defy his wishes, his crypt is elevated so that it is being carried on the shoulders of 4 larger-than-life-sized statues who are on a large pedestal. It looks like they are carrying a coffin – and they are, with the body of Christopher Columbus inside!
This way he was kept in Spain, but not buried on Spanish soil. His body is lifted at least 14 feet off the ground. I wonder if this is what Columbus meant when he expressed not wanting to be buried on Spanish soil.
I did a good bit of research and learned that Santa Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, also believes they have the remains of the Christopher Columbus. but I personally believe that it is right here in the Seville Cathedral in Spain.
