Give a Cheer
This is my response to my “Scraplift Your 1st Sb.com Faves” Challenge for Scrap Happenzz Critique Group, challenging us to lift the very first thing we ever saved to our faves! The first for me was Jill's “Snorkeling” LO – I loved her use of multiple pics plus at that time I intended to scrap our island wedding/honeymoon & I dug the watery feel of her LO, here's a link to it: http://www.scrapbook.com/myplace/index.php?mod=galleries&u=41507&m=view&id=123&start=100&page=1&f=1 I was also inspired by a LO in the 12/07 Scraptivity Notions Newsletter (no artist named, you're supposed to guess, for a prize, which DT member did which page…)
During our '06 move, I took pics of any sentimental items that I was throwing away; this way I could hold onto the memories while getting rid of the clutter! This dorm room diorama I did as a theatre design class project in college was worth its own 2 pager. I was particularly proud of how I recreated the art posters on the walls & a pack of cigs. Also, a bagel wrapper & bag, & garbage bag made from the real materials.
Jill's original LO inspired the nautical color scheme & my aim to have a watery movement overall. To mimic her torn mattes, I did angled photo mattes & handcut journaling/title blocks.
The eyelets (my 1st use EVER on a LO) were set using a Big Bite bought w/ a Valentine's '08 GC from Eat Sleep Scrap; the swirl stamps were a bday 08 gifty from twinscrapbee – thanks Melissa & Brenda! Please pardon the imperfect scans/stitching, there's more margin space all around. I blurred out my roomie's last name & my family's address.
I inked the journaling but not the photo descriptions because I wanted the narrative parts to stand out more. Here's the journaling minus the photo info:
“So while purging belongings during our '06 move, I took photos of the sentimental items to preserve the memories (while throwing out the clutter). One item that had to go was this Dorm Room Diorama. During my sophomore year at New York University ('90-'91), I took a terrific class on Theatrical Design Concepts, taught by a prof (whose name unfortunately escapes me, Doug Something…?) who was a successful Broadway theatrical designer. He really got us thinking about the FEEL of environs & would give us cool abstract assignments like “sketch 5 examples of ‘door-ness that you see in your life'” – meaning sketch actual different doors or elements that COULD be doors (e.g. an opening amongst trees in the park). One assignment was to create a diorama of one's bedroom. At the time, I lived in Brittany Residence Hall (#808, a 5 person suite) w/ friend Joann. Jo & I got along well 'cause we were both so CLUTTERED & laid back about it, LOL!
I had a lot of fun recreating our dorm room, & thus our lives, w/ paper & other materials… flexing my creativity for a school assignment! When I presented to the class I was asked what sound would resonate through this theatre “set” in the AM, I think I said a hair dryer, alarm clock & music (or maybe someone else said that, don't remember). My classmates, dorm mates & friends (then & since) have always thought this diorama was way cool, as did I! A step inside my dorm life…
… So here's the kicker – I took all these pics so I could throw away this awesome (if I don't say so myself!) diorama without guilt… I wanted to get rid of the clutter of this dusty cardboard box but still retain the memories of my artwork. Well… Greg wouldn't let me! He said it was too cool to throw away. I think this diorama is a groovy testament of my creativity but not the most sophisticated thing to have on a shelf in a grown-up home. But when GREG gets into the spirit of keeping this, then I do too. So after taking ALL these pics & mentally saying goodbye to this thing, we STILL have it! LOL!”
