Original Pictures or Copies?

Do you use the original pictures when you scrapbook, especially older pictures or do you make copies and use those for your LO's?

Everything that I've done so far I've had doubles made and still have the originals in albums. Just wondering what everyone else is doing.

If they're old pictures I usually scan them and have them printed either my myself or upload to somewhere and have them done.

The older ones I scanned in and printed myself if I didnt have a double for it. When I started scrapbooking I was using 35MM so I'd get doubles printed. Now that I have a digital cam I dont need to worry about that

I only scrap copies, so I have photo albums and scrapbooks. I get worried that the photos are going to get lost forever so I scan the old ones keep the originals, print a copy and save the scanned image to disk!

No copy can compare to the original on photos from the 1800's to like the 30's I scan those and use originals.

I use the originals of all current photos I have. I don't have too many older photos but the few that I do have were shared with me by my brother in law and those I scanned and had printed as they didn't belong to me. I haven't managed to worm the older family photos form my mother's grip yet, but someday when they are shared, I plan on scanning them and sharing them with my three sisters. I have one sister that actively scraps and I know she's chomping at the bit for an opportunity to get at them as well. LOL

All photos that I have used I have scanned except for my very early scrapping where I wasn't aware at the time of the importance of needing them down the line. NOW, all of them get scanned

When I started doing a heritage album, I had several photos from 1930's and earlier and had the same dilemma. I started scanning them, but ended up using most of the originals on the scrapbook pages. Granted, I did not crop a ******** thing, they are very simply-desinged pages and I was very careful to use photo corners and safe products. I figured, someone else will have the scrapbook one day and why not have the orignals in there where I know they will protected, instead of a photo box or stored away in an album - where they might get lost or "unlooked at" for years and years. I also thought, I could always make 12x12 copies of the pages if someone wanted a copy of the scrapbook. I used a Scrapworks brown leather bay box too so they will stay non-dusty.

I always use the original.
I scrap with a friend and her boyfriend gets upset with her when she cuts down a photo. We never understood why. My way of thinking is it's going into an album....a scrapbook album! I would have way too many books around if I kept photo albums of all my pics and then scraped them too.
I do however keep them all on my computer and my walgreens account just incase I need another copy.

If I use an original, I always make sure I have a way of getting a copy of it later if I want it - ie. scanning it and keeping it, negatives etc.

I want to get my negatives redone onto CDs but it is costly so a little at a time. I will do as I scrap

If its an older picture I copy it, espeically from the 40's and then because its not acid free, most are faded if not then starting to fade.

New pictures I take now I always get doubles. Because I love my scrapbooks but I'm going to give them to my kids and not have anything to keep at home of memories when they leave the nest so I at least can make another book or use a photo album with my doubles

I usually use copies. Older pictures and negatives I've scanned in and can print from my computer.

ditto - same here. I have older pictures dating back to early 1900's of my ggg grandparents and I have scanned them all. I have yet to print them out and scrap them yet but wouldn't dream of using the originals. Besides, they are now in the bank safety deposit box for safe keeping.

Newer photos are all digital and are kept on cd's so I have no prob using the original. I can print those anytime.

I'm gathering photos for a heritage album. I plan on using copies (mostly). Whatever original I do use I am going to adhere with photo corners to keep any adhesive off the photo itself.

PS. By scanning them I also have the ability to fix any blemishes in the photo.........that don't add to the character of the photo. I have quite a few old polaroids that have a crack in them. I (actually my DH) can fix that in photoshop.

i try to use original photos as much as possible, my mom never really put pictures into an album, so they were just thrown in plastic boxes unorganized, so i've started scrapping them so my parents have something that is organized and easy to look at, i've scanned in all the pictures before i scrap them so if anyone else wants a copy or if i do duplicate pages i can use the copes, and I try and not cut them down if i dont need to.

I also use photo corners for all the old photos so i'm not sticking anything to them and damage them.

depending on the type of neg. you can take them to a CVS when they have the disks for 1.99 and put like 120 on one disk. i have done this with some old photos and all the news that are take with film camaras. and i keep all the disks in one box. that way if something happens to the negs i still have the disks and if the house burns down i only have to grab 2 box's and run.

oringals. If it's an important older pic, not a digial, I might scan it. But all my album up till college graduation were 35mm (I started off with 110...when I was little...loved that thing). Now I have digital. I keep any copies in a box.

I have a bag full of older photos, of me growing up and with my friends and such. When I get around to it, I'll do something with them, I may scan a few, mainly to send to someone, but otherwise, I'll use the orginals.

For recent pictures (taken with my digital camera), I scrap the originals. For older pictures, it depends. Sometimes I scan them and print a copy. Other times I attach them to my layout with photo corners so that they are not physically attached to the page with adhesive or anything.

I am currently working on 4 identical heritage albums so I have to make 3 copies of the original. I scrap the original for my album and the copies will be in the albums for my sisiter and two brothers. I take the original to a camera shop who does photo restorationa and I have been very pleased with the results. You really can't tell the copies from the original.

Original. That way I feel like I really finished something.

Anything older that was from a regular camera or something I don't have doubles of, I scan and reprint. But with most pics taken now with digital it doesn't matter.

Cannon makes a scanner that you can scan your negatives in, save and reprint just like any other digital or scanned photograph. You can only do a few at a time but for the $80 the scanner cost and time I'll do it ... around here it is quite expensive to get someplace to scan and put on cd for you.

I usually use original photos of shots I have taken. When I develop my film (yep, film!), I only get a CD, so I can choose and edit the shots I want. For older photos, I use copies, but save them on CD as well.

New pictures - I have a digital camera so I print as I need them.

Older pictures (Before Digital) - I scan and scrap the copy.

Really old pictures! - I scan and scrap the copy.

I had a photography place tell me the best way to store old pictures to ensure they will not decay any further than mine already have is to store them in a dark, climate controlled area. I am afraid if I scrapped the originals I would not have them for generations to come. My plan is to put them on cardstock with photo corners and LABEL the picture of who what when where and then put them away in a photo box where they are safe.

I keep all my photos on CDs now instead. I just print what I need from the CDs. My older photos I keep in a photo safe box. I've scanned the majority of them in and put them on CDs, but I still don't want to scrap those older pictures. Maybe some other time, later on.

All mine are digital so I guess the prints woudl be called copies? I scan older pics and then scrap the original so I have a copy save digitally. I dont need the orginal anymore then so I can feel ok about scrapping it.

I like to use originals. Why use copies and have the originals lying around? If I really like a picture I scan it just in case I want to scrap it in the future.

I scrap all originals whether new one or old old old heritage pics. My albums are the storage place for my pics. I do scan heritage pics to save on a cd in case something happened to my albums. I scrap all my pics. I also do not use anything that would damage my pics in my albums.

Newer photos I scrap the orginals.

Older photos...I scan. Although in my baby album, I used the orginals because my Mom gave them to me, but didn't crop them. Put them on photo mats, or photo corners instead. But the much older photos I have to scan anyways because I borrow half of them from the family, and they'd kill me if I used their only original photo.

I use originals most of the time and use photo corners so they can be removed.I make simple pages and don't crop most of my stuff. i don't like having a bunch of doubles I feel I have enough albums already just with one copy of each picture. I do however have some doubles that I do keep in a box. I plan sometime on getting a fire safe for them

i use originals..i know books say not to but thats bull..yeah..what are you gonna do with the extras? thats the point of scrappin them..so ppl can apprecitae them and not have tyem sitting around collecting dust

I scrap the originals--isn't that the point of getting out of boxes and drawers? I also, make a color copy, which I store in an A/F box, just incase something happens to my albums.

Sometimes I blow up a tiny picture so I can see better what's on it. I scrap that and put the tiny one in a little clear bag and staple it to the corner of the page.
