Journaling: Tim and I had talked (ok, I had begged) for some time about getting a cat. On Saturday, June 4th, we went to Petsmart on Wadsworth Boulevard. We weren’t exactly planning on getting a cat, but when I saw S’mores, a tiny 2-year-old gray tabby sitting there in that tiny steel cage, my heart melted. And then it happened. She looked at me with those big green eyes. We had made eye contact and I was completely attached to her. I told Tim that we needed her, that if we got her it would be a good distraction from missing Sara and Taylor, who had just moved to Florida. We left Petsmart without her. After all, we didn’t exactly have any of the things we’d need to make our home right for a cat…until a few hours later when we found ourselves wondering the isles of Target, comparing cat food, litter, litter pans, and scoops. And eventually, they ended up in our cart and then in our car and finally made their way to our house. That evening I looked on Petfinder.com, a website that made it possible to search for pets. There she was, sitting again in that awful cold box at Petsmart, just waiting for us to come rescue her. Sunday morning we woke up and drove across town to Petsmart where I was able to hold S’mores in my arms while Tess nervously checked her out. We filled out the adoption papers, became approved, and took her home with us!
The first few days, well, actually weeks, were tough on her as well as on Tim and I. She became known as “the thing that lives in our basement” because she was too nervous to come upstairs on her own. When I carried her upstairs, she would hide in a corner until she escaped back downstairs. After about three weeks though, she made it up to the main level of the house. About a week later she made it up to the second story, and after about four and a half weeks with us, she was pretty much accustomed to the whole house!
