I took this photo of snow on the autumn leaves in our backyard this past weekend.

Journaling reads: In the words of Carol Bishop Hipps, October is “the mellow, messy, leaf-kicking, perfect pause between the opposing miseries of summer and winter.” Except if you were in New England in 2011, where poor October was interrupted by a snowfall! Believe me, I love the beauty of a fresh snowfall as much as I love the colorful autumn leaves. But together? No way! It's like dipping your potato chips in ice cream. Separately, they are wonderful. But together it just becomes yuckiness. This year, we got an early surprise snowfall in October. The small children thought winter had arrived, while the bigger kids had to trick-or-treat in the snow. It's amazing to think that just three short weeks ago, we were celebrating Sophia's birthday party in 84 degree weather! As much as I love the seasons, I wish the fall and spring were longer, and the summer and winter a little shorter. Our in-between month of October needs a comeback.
