Journaling reads: My great, great uncle Emil Herman Wilhelm Buckendahl. He was the brother of my Great Grandma Koehler. Emil was a World War I hero and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, which is second in importance to the Congressional Medal of Honor. October 5, 1918, near Gesnes, France: Pvt. Company F, 127th Infantry, 32nd Division: A litter bearer, on his own initiative, went out from a position of shelter to an exposed flank under intense machine-gun fire, and carried back to safety a wounded soldier who had been left in the field. The article on the left is a copy of his obituary, which has a surprising amount of information about the man in it and the picture on the right is a copy of a picture of him in his uniform from the hometown newspaper.
