Wow, it was beautiful in spite of its sad use. My great grandmother was one the ladies who needed the money put in the poor box when she lost her husband and had five children to raise alone.

I saw this "poor box" in the wall of an old market place on our trip to the coast. Dated 1897 it gives an insight into the times when the poor were looked after by the community.
