We were pretty much overdosed on french chateaus by our 3rd day in the Loire region (had already visited 5 different ones by this time), when our B&B host suggested we visit the nearby abbey. Not much for convents and the likes, it took quite a bit of persuasion before we thought to give it a shot for lack of better things to do. Boy were we pleasantly surprised! Not only was this once a royal abbey (the remains of Richard the Lionheart and his family are interred here), it was also converted into a high security prison (what a huge change!) after the revolution. Although I had a tough time trying to absorb much of the history, we had a really pleasant and reflective visit regardless. Certainly highly recommended!
