Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011 – We started the day with a quick breakfast while deciding what to do while we were in Samarang, Indonesia. I wanted to go to the famous ruins of the temple of Borobudur but Bill had already seen it.

We knew it would take the tour buses 2 hours to go each way because the police escorts clear other traffic off the road and keep the buses moving but by private car, it could take up to 4 hours each way.

Bill would not agree to pay $149.00 each for the ship's excursion so we hired a private minivan. Even if it took us the entire 4 hours to go each way, we would still have an hour to explore the temple. There were only 2 of us so we were very comfortable with lots of room. Best of all, it was only $26.00 for each of us for the day!

The drive started nice, although it was slow because the roads were narrow and traffic was heavy. At least it gave me plenty of opportunities to take pictures out the window. Four hours to get there, an hour at the temple and four hours back – we'd be okay.

One thing that was interesting were the “gas stations” along the side of the road. They looked like the lemonade stands that a child would set up – rustic wooden stands. Only these stands had bottles of fuel for the motor scooters which were the main mode of transportation. There were old soft drink bottles, glass bleach bottles – an assortment of different bottles of gas on these stands on the side of the road. Most of these stands were so poorly constructed that it looked like one good breeze would wipe out the entire operation! I just couldn't imagine selling gas out of used glass bottles on the side of the road!

This little stand with "Dell" on it is a roadside gas stand - you can see bottles of gas if you look closely and in the next picture (lower right) is a little market and it has a gas stand in the front of it.
