I had fun playing with the MM dyes on this page. I dyed the embroidery thread, and used a foam brush to swipe across the top and bottom of the background. I also did a dye wash across the journal block. Journaling: I snapped these photos at the Olsen beach house Labor Day weekend, 2004. Another gray day on the shores of Grayland, Lena and Virgel walking the beach while Connor and Clint frolicked in the nearby surf. I was really excited when I got my pictures back and the one of Lee and Virg, arm in arm, came out well. I showed Lee and she shrugged. Maybe it didn’t capture her interest because it was of their backs rather than faces, or because walking together is normal. But those things that are so obvious to Lee are exactly what touch me about this photo, and about their relationship. They’re connected, constantly. To walk arm and arm or hand in hand is second nature to them; after fifty eight years of marriage they still love each others’ company, plain and simple. I hope that Clint and I will be married for this long, and that we will have the same depth of love and respect as his grandparents express for each other every day.
