Line is Collage Press Jackson Lodge, letters and name plate by Basic Grey<p>journaling reads: Calvin reads through enjoyable books as quickly as possible but it takes him awhile to find additional interesting books. Mom told him that The Series of Unfortunate Events books were a good read and that he should give the first book, A Bad Beginning, a try. In November, after seeing the movie on video, he started it. There were many aspects of the book that he found fascinating. He liked that the author tried to dissuade the reader from going any farther in the book. It was a “horrible book full of misery, Lemony Snicket proclaimed. Fortunately, Calvin ignored this advice. His favorite chapter in the first book was when Violet tried to save Sunny with a hook but things didn’t go quite as planned. After plowing through a handful of books, Calvin noted that the adults never believed the children when they said Count Olaf was in disguise. He also noticed that each book had thirteen chapters – the unlucky number (except for the last book). By the time he finished reading all the books, he decided his most beloved characters were Klaus, Sunny, Esme Squalor (and her trendiness), and Vice Principal Nero. Book 12, The Penultimate Peril, was Calvin’s favorite book overall. He enjoyed that that so many characters from the previous books returned and started to wrap up the story line and answer some of the mysteries. By the second week in February, Calvin had finished the whole series. Thirteen books in ten weeks. With the unfortunate events behind him, he decided to read about the more pleasant experiences of Ramona Quimby and other Beverly Cleary books.
