This is why we travel. The way you described the experience and the food is incredible. What an adventure. The page design with the three separate journaling blocks is great.
I love that you experience so much of the wonderful culture! I have eaten at a restaurant like this in India and it was quite an experience - wonderful and a little unsettling all at the same time!
The place we went for lunch was very interesting. Right inside the door were women sitting on the floor shaping small loaves of bread and putting them on a rack in the stone ovens right behind them without having to stand up. We knew this bread would not be like any we had at home but we were anxious to try the fresh hot bread with our meal!
Our tables were on the patio surrounding a grassy courtyard with camels and donkeys. I expected a camel to lower his head over the fence and start eating off the tables – they were that close! (It's probably happened before because they didn't seat anyone at the tables directly on the courtyard where the animals could reach.) Fortunately our table was close to the center of the open patio.
A small hibachi was placed on each of our tables and they kept putting more and chicken and beef on each of hibachi and bringing us more fresh hot bread, rice and several other meats and vegetables. Some of it was wonderful and some of it – well, we didn't clean our plates very well.
Three men with primitive Egyptian musical instruments strolled around stopping to play at each table. When they got to our table they started playing for us. The problem was that each of the 3 musicians in the band seemed to be playing a completely different song completely oblivious to what song the other 2 were playing. We were able to clearly recognize that one of the musicians was playing “Happy Birthday”. We do not know why – it was not a birthday for any of the 4 of us at our table. Asking around later, it was not a birthday for anyone in our tour group and we took over the entire restaurant. But they played songs, including “Happy Birthday” for each table.
With full tummies we got back on the bus for a short drive and then the time came the moment we had been waiting for. We kept our eyes peeled out the bus window until finally we could see the pyramids on the horizon. They were hard to see at first because the huge buildings in Cairo did a wonderful job of hiding them but as we got close the pyramids overpowered everything. They were magnificent!
