Sunday, February 1st, 2015 – Before we went back to the ship last night Bill met a local taxi driver with an older mini-van who agreed to take us around the island for 3 hours for $30.00 each if we could find two more couples to go. We had no problem filling the van – the two other couples from our dinner table joined us this morning for the tour.

There was a problem though. We had been told on the ship that tours and taxis are not allowed to operate on Sunday. The island closes everything – nothing is open and locals who are caught working on Sunday are arrested. When this driver offered to take us out Sunday morning we thought maybe the law had been relaxed or maybe there was an exception when ships were in port so we didn't consider that the taxi driver was breaking local law to take us on the tour. We all 6 met John, our driver outside the port date and we were on our way to see Tonga!

First he took us to the royal tombs. The graves were fenced and it was prohibited to go beyond the surrounding fence so we were only able to see it from a distance. Our guide told us there were 5 kings and 2 queens in the tombs although we had a little bit of a language barrier. His English was very broken so we aren't sure how much accurate information we got but it did appear there were 7 tombs.
