Sunday, March 29th, 2015 - Tonight at almost midnight we walked to the back deck and it was beautiful but eerie - the only illumination was from the moon. Normally the ship is lit up with lights everywhere, even a string of lights over the ship that run from one end to the other! It is always so bright that the stars aren't even visible!

For the past week the ship has been darkened at night in hopes we can sail through this part of the ocean without being noticed so if pirates are out there, hopefully they won't see us. With all the exterior lights turned off the stars just jump out and look so close it seems you could touch them. Big stars, little stars – I never would imagined there could be so many stars! I remember looking at the stars when we visited my grandparent's farm in the country in Alabama but it didn't start to compete with the number of stars out over the ocean or the brightness of them when the ship's lights are turned off.

Security guards are positioned all around the lower decks 24 hours-a-day. They are well armed but carrying very concealed so they won't upset the passengers.

We stood out back and talked to the 2 guards on the back deck on level 2 wearing night-vision goggles watching for approaching boats which might be pirates attempting to board our ship.

I always like to rest my elbows on the railing and look over at the ocean so see the wake and waves our ship makes. The lights of the ship highlight the waves but now the only light for the waves to reflect from is the light of the moon. It was terribly romantic until Bill said, “Be careful with your arms on the railing – you are just a couple inches from the rolled razor wire”.

Monday, March 30th, 2015 – Today is a sea day and we are scheduled to enter the Gulf of Aden later today which is the most targeted area by the pirates. The Captain announced after leaving the last port (Salalah, Oman) that we would be entering the really narrow area of the Gulf of Aden which is close to the land on both sides and is the worst point for pirate attacks so we will be traveling at maximum speed.
