Wednesday, April 8th, 2015 – We woke up this morning anticipating the big gala party at Ephesus tonight! The ship had reserved the entire old city and was hosting a very elegant evening including the Agean Chamber Orchestra to play in the old outdoor theater! This is the first time in 10 years there has been a concert scheduled at Ephesus!

An out-of-season cold snap meant we had to bundle up which wasn't how I wanted to dress for this party – but still – it was something we had been looking forward to since we got the invitation several weeks ago. I had planned to wear a long silk caftan tonight but with the temperature predicted to be at 54 degrees or lower after dark – the long silk caftan wasn't going to happen. Especially since we would be sitting outside on concrete seats in an open theater! So much for it being a “dressy” event. We had to wear whatever we could to keep warm. Forget the evening wear – get out the jeans.

Now the question was – “what were we going to do in port all day today, since we have been to Ephesus before and will be going back tonight for the party?”

We roamed around the port city of Kusadasi, walking a bit and stopping in a nice hotel where we used the internet to catch up on email and Facebook. We got back to the ship early in the afternoon which gave us plenty of time to eat a late lunch and then watch the first episode of the first season of Blue Bloods. (We've watched the entire first five seasons of “Castle” on this cruise so we had to move on to another series.)

We both enjoyed Blue Bloods which is good because I brought the first 4 seasons with me! (I like Castle better though.)

I had planned to spend a lot of time on hair and makeup to go with my perfect long dress for the evening but since the weather dictated warm casual clothes it took us 15 minutes to get ready. Enough buses were waiting at the dock to transport all the ship's passengers (approximately 800 I think) and as we boarded the bus, each of us was handed a warm blanket to wrap around us during the concert or drape over our shoulders if we got cold.

Once we got there I was in awe! Holland America had reserved the entire old city for this private party – no one else was allowed admittance at the gates. As we walked in each of us were given a standard Ephesus admission ticket exactly like the one we were given when we visited Ephesus several years ago and we used it to walk through the entrance. Once we got past the gate there were people dressed in costumes like they would have worn in the days when Ephesus was busy and bustling!
