Friday, April 11th, 2014 – Today we crossed the equator for the second time on this cruise and were entertained with an equator-crossing ceremony. That is always a big deal on a cruise ship.

Every ship I've ever been on that crossed the equator has had a King Neptune ceremony, although if the ship crosses the equator twice, like they do on all world cruises, there is only one King Neptune ceremony. Sometimes the ceremony is at the time of the first crossing and sometimes at the time of the second crossing.

The passengers always have a good time watching the antics of King Neptune, no matter which cruise line we are on. New staff members who are unsuspecting often end up covered in whip cream, spaghetti sauce, chocolate sauce and sometimes buckets of cooked and cooled pasta and thrown in the pool. One time the Captain was even covered in whipped cream by the crew and thrown into the pool in his uniform and shoes.

Volunteers are always requested from the passengers, and there are always some who will volunteer. However, anyone who has ever seen one of these crossing ceremonies knows better! They will end up covered in food and thrown in the pool! After King Neptune and his court leaves and the ceremony ends, the pool is always closed all afternoon because it has to be drained and scrubbed!

On any ship we've been on, no matter which cruise line, passengers were given a certificate showing that they crossed the equator. We are getting a collection and I treasure every one of the certificates and the memories that go with them.

My favorite certificates were the once we were given on Royal Caribbean in 2009. Since that cruise went from Florida, around South America and then to California it crossed the equator twice. We got a crossing certificate the first time for crossing the equator and then the second time our ship crossed the equator, we were given a Double-Crosser certificate. Very clever.
