After leaving the Salisbury Cathedral we drove to Stonehenge and took the tour. How awesome to stand in ruins that are over 4,000 years old and date back to 3,000 BC. (Since visiting Stonehenge we watched a documentary on Stonehenge which said it is more likely at least 10,000 years old! ) The only thing that is certain is that Stonehenge is cloaked in mystery and holds a lot of secrets.

I can never resist doing a little research so here is what I found: Stonehenge is a massive stone monument located north of Salisbury, England. Research shows that the site has continuously evolved over a period of about 10,000 years. The structure that we call “Stonehenge” was built between roughly 5,000 and 4,000 years ago and that forms just one part of a larger, and highly complex, sacred landscape.

The biggest of Stonehenge's stones, known as sarsens, are up to 30 feet tall and weigh 25 tons on average.

The facts surrounding the architects and construction of Stonehenge remain shadowy at best; the purpose of the arresting monument is even more of a mystery. There is strong archaeological evidence that Stonehenge was used as a burial site, at least for part of its long history, but most scholars believe it served other functions as well—either as a ceremonial site, a religious pilgrimage destination, a final resting place for royalty or a memorial erected to honor and perhaps spiritually connect with distant ancestors. Hunting played an important role in the area. The presence of abundant game may have led people to consider the area sacred.

NOTE - I purchased the photo page shown here and put my own words on it. In fact, the title "Stonehenge" was even on it - I just added the words in black.
