Oh my gosh...the place where this temple is, is freakin' gorgeous. I have never been to Cancun but I have this place on the bucket novel. My mouth is open and so wishing I was there. Thanks for the cyber vacation.
The Mayans built a temple to the Goddess Ixchel at the Southeastern-most tip of the island and within this temple they incorporated an observatory. Ixchel was the Mayan Goddess closely associated with the sophisticated Mayan astronomical readings taken here and elsewhere.
This is the most easterly point in Mexico which is one of the reasons it was so important to the Mayans. The temple was also used as a lighthouse, to guide Mayan seafarers through the darkness to the island or help them on their way to nearby ports like Tulum.
If you go to Punta Sur and walk through the park to the Temple of Ixchel, then down the stairs to seal level, it is said that you will be the first person in Mexico to see the sunrise. It is the first place in all of Mexico where the sunlight touches each morning.
