Wednesday, September 14th, 2016 – Welcome to Rota, Spain!

We boarded the plane around midnight last night and an hour later, dinner was served – and not a light dinner either. We both chose baked pasta with red sauce and ground beef and lots of cheese on top (and was very good). It came with salad/dressing and cheese/crackers, a granola bar and slice of Sara Lee pound cake. This was an unexpected treat – meals are seldom offered when flying on the military flights. At best, we are sometimes offered boxes lunches with sandwiches for $5.00 each, but even that doesn't happen often.

However, when the military leases a plane, once in a blue moon, meals are provided as well as flight attendants who serve them. This one came complete with flight attendants and more food than we could eat.

With full tummies, we slept a little while on the 6 hour, 45-minute flight. As soon as we woke up 4 or 5 hours later, they were serving lunch.

It didn't seem possible that it was lunch time already, but with all the time zones we had flown through, breakfast had come and gone and it was time to eat lunch. I chose a turkey sandwich on a big roll and Bill chose the ham sandwich. Both had lettuce and tomato and were large enough that I saved half of my sandwich for an afternoon snack along with my potato chips..

We were also given bags of pretzels that looked like little hearts. Interesting but something happened to the taste. I don't like pretzels so I gave mine to Bill but he didn't like them either.

By the time we got through eating and trash was collected, we were already making our descent to Rota. Our plane touched ground a few minutes after 1:00 in the afternoon.

Bill had corresponded with the Navy Lodge in Rota before we left home and was told there were no rooms available but to check again again when we arrived in Spain. We got very lucky – a clean, comfortable room was available for us!

On the down side, they could only guarantee one night and we wanted to stay two nights to get over jet lag before starting our slow drive to Barcelona to meet our cruise ship on September 20th.

We slept like a couple of rocks – don't think either one of us stirred all night.

NOTE: There are two periods after potato chips – fixed it. Please let me know if you see anything else!
