When you were born, one of the things I prayed for you was that you be
self-confident and outgoing. I hoped that you would be one of those people
who never meet a stranger. I keep hoping that as you get older, you will
outgrown the shyness you get from both your father and I. You are such a
wonderful person, caring. loving and kind. I hope you know how much I think of you, how much I believe you are going to be a wonderful husband and father. I know it must seem that I am hard on you. I want you to know that even though I push you always to try harder, and to do your best, that you are good enough right now, this very minute. Society demands that you be competitive, or you get left behind, and because you are so much like your father and I, you want to be “the best there is”, at everything you try. That’s a noble goal to try for, but impossible to achieve. You know that no one else is the best at everything, and you don’t expect anyone else to be perfect, so stop demanding it from yourself. Give yourself a break when someone else does better at something than you do. Be sincerely happy for that person, because they want to be the best at something, too. Know that your self-worth is dependent on how hard you try, not on whether you are the best. You are a truly good person. You are protective of your family, you try never to hurt anyone’s feelings, and you are tender-hearted I love that about you, it gives you value as a person, and as a man. I tell you these things because I want you to know them, to never question them, and to realize that you are perfect as you are. If you continue to beat yourself up over the little things you have no control over, you will be a victim of your own making. You are already a loving, kind and generous person, and that’s the most you need to be.
