Journaling:
From Florence, our bus took Ryan and me to Pisa. The cathedral of Pisa was enough to make the whole trip worth the wait. The celebrated leaning tower was fun just to see in person. The whole cathedral was lilting a bit, but the tower was more obvious. The visit to Pisa was definitely a highlight of the trip.

Day Seven
June 12th
Civitavecchia, Ital was the “port of call” for Wednesday. Ryan and I began early again today. Our tour bus was wonderfully tall, and made for a great view.
For centuries, Rome has been called the Eternal City, a title earned through its importance as one of the great cities of Western civilization, as the capital of the Roman Empire, and as the world center of the Roman Catholic Church.
Our first stop in Rome was the Vatican Museum which is actually inside the Vatican City, an independent state in Italy. Inside, we saw many beautiful tapestries, paintings and artifacts. The thing that I loved the most was the frescos, especially in the Sistine Chapel. The detail and lasting brightness of Michelangelo’s paintings was amazing
From the Vatican City, our tour took us to the Coliseum, where legendary gladiators fought for their lives. It was later consecrated by Pope Pius IX as a memorial to everyone who had died there. Outside the Coliseum, we saw the Arch of Constantine, built to commemorate Constantine the Great’s victory over Maxentius. After lunch we rode back to the Vatican City to visit Saint Peter’s Basilica because it had been closed during a morning papal meeting.
