In 1605 Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament (our Governments house next to Big Ben). He was caught and was executed. Every year on 5th November we celebrate the failed attempt by building big bonfires , make an effigy of Guy Fawkes and throwing him on the burning fire and let off fireworks. this is a very big occasion throughout the UK. In Bridgwater Somerset Guy Fawkes is celebrated for his attempt, they were not Royalist there and in novemebr hold the largest winter carnival in the world led by Guy Fawes. Recently they erected this statue to celebrate him, this is contrary to the rest of the UK.
