Saturday, April 5th, 2014 – Quiet day at sea. Our trivia team tied for first place today. What tripped us up is “Which 4 celebrities started Planet Hollywood”? We were correct with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwartzenagger but we missed Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.

At noon Captain Mercer announced that 3 of the ports on our itinerary have been cancelled. We will not be going to Ascension Island, Gambia or Senegal because of the current outbreak of Ebola viral disease in those areas. Instead we will be visiting St. Lucia and we will have a 2-day visit at the port of Praia on Santiago Island in the Cape Verde Islands. We always enjoy the ports where the ship docks and we get to explore for 2 days.

Sunday, April 6th, 2014 – Quiet day but a good one. Although we did miserable in the morning trivia we came in 2nd in the afternoon trivia.

I'm still going to computer classes on sea days although Craig, the Techspert for the cruise has done a few repeat classes which I did not attend. Today he taught us about Facebook. It was interesting and although I'm already comfortable with Facebook I still learned a few tips and tricks.

Today was Great Gatsby day on the ship – the dining room and common areas of the ship were decorated in gold and black sparkles, tinsel and balloons. The casino had a Great Gatsby event tonight, the Great Gatsby was the theme of the formal lobster dinner tonight and there was a Great Gatsby ball after dinner. Also the small theater continually ran the movie, “The Great Gatsby” with Robert Redford today. Many of the passengers really get into the mood of these themed days at sea (I think there are 18 big themes for this cruise with movies, formal lobster dinners and decorations to go with the theme). It was fun to see people wearing roaring 20's clothes around the ship tonight. We were all given fedoras like they wore in the 20's (especially the gangsters) and I loved seeing all the men in their gangster hats at dinner.

Holland America publishes a list of these themed evenings before the cruises so people can prepare special clothes and costumes. I couldn't believe how many men wore black shirts with white ties or red ties and really looked like they stepped out of the roaring 20's. Some of the costumes the women wore looked like they were ready to step right onto the dance floor and do the Charleston! Flappers were everywhere!

After dinner Bill asked if we could have some of the gold star-shaped Mylar balloons used for decorations around the ship and was told they were going to destroy them so he could have all he wanted. (They blow up approximately 600 balloons to decorate the dining room on theme nights.) We went back to our cabin with 45 helium balloons which are now covering our ceiling with the gold ribbon hanging down. It really looks fun! We still have some heart-shaped Mylar helium balloons from Valentine's Day but they are getting pretty deflated but they have lasted almost 2 months!

Monday, April 7th, 2014 – The day started out like a normal sea day but when Bill left the cabin to go get cinnamon rolls for us he saw a notice that had been left on our door. It said, “Congratulations – you are now 4-Star Mariners!” We've actually spent 200 days cruising on Holland America Lines! There are lots of little perks for reaching 4-Star Mariner which we don't care much about – like priority boarding which is nice in some of the ports but not a huge deal to us.

But Holland America has one perk that we really are excited about! FREE LAUNDRY SERVICE! It is unlimited – you can send out as much as you want every day and it comes back all nicely washed, dried. pressed and folded the next day. Sometimes later the same day. We were waiting for this so we sent out two bulging stuffed bags of laundry as soon as we got the notice.
