I received this trimmer as an unexpected gift and absolutely love it. The best thing about it is the laser telling you where it will cut and if it's straight or not. I have cut several sheets of cardstock with success. The trimmer is sturdy, but lightweight and cuts very easily. A wonderful trimmer!

Where has this paper trimmer been all of my life??? I love this baby! I love how easy it is to get a 12" x 12" piece of paper cut exactly where I want it (unlike the trimmers that don't have a flat 12" surface so paper can shift). The best part...the laser beam that shines and shows me just where the blade will be cutting. So amazing!!! The cutter base is lighweight and sturdy. The only drawback I've found is in the top edge where you align the paper (where the ruler is). It's slightly rolled so you should double check your paper to make sure it doesn't slide up the edge before cutting. I haven't cut multiple sheets of paper yet, but when I do, I'll for sure check that top edge.

I love this paper trimmer!!! I have been through 3 previous guillotine trimmers and have had problems with the grid being crooked and the blade not being sharp, not with this trimmer!!! The cutting mat is straight and the laser line reassures you that it is! The gridlines are nice and easy to see and there are markings for popular sizes of photos, such as 5 X 7, 3 X 5, etc. The handle is so easy to grip, it fits comfortably in your hand! I love the finger guard, press down on it in the middle and it holds the entire sheet in place while you are cutting!
Lining up to the top of the grid is different because it does have a sloped edge, but I just line it up to the grid lines on the base and it is just as easy! The blade is sharp when cutting, it doesn't leave any feathery or jagged edges!

I actually wore out my last 12" paper trimmer, cutting paper until the blade was too dull to be sharpened anymore! I decided that any tool that gets this much use in my studio needs to be the best quality and this Xacto Trimmer is just that! The combination of light weight, the laser light guide, the ergonomically agreeable handle, the locking mechanism for the guillotine blade and the non-skid feet make it a true winner in my opinion. Best of all, it cuts straight and square! Sadly, not every trimmer does that. It is not an inexpensive trimmer, but it's worth every penny!
I purchased this paper trimmer two years ago and it's still sharp as a razor. I've crafted several albums with it and you can easily read the grids, line up your papers square and the added feature of the laser light lets you make sure your LO is exactly where you want it for a great cuts time after time.
2020 Update: I've now owned this cutter for 11 years! It's well worth the money. Its self sharpening and next to my big shot, it's the main workhorse in my craftroom. I LOVE this trimmer!

So far I have found the paper Trimmer far better than my other one. This is more accurate, using the laser light as a guide. It also handles cutting paper without the blade bending or twisting. I definitely like this. I forgot to add a serious con to this item which needs to be addressed. When unpacking be very careful as the handle lock is not attached. As you take the unit out of the box and packaging, the blade will pop up and, if not careful, you could get cut. Xacto needs to make sure the blade is secured and safe.
The Xacto trimmer has all the features I wanted. Could accommodate 12x12 paper. guide to show cut line, portable and way to hold paper down. Unfortunately, it feels cheap. I hope the plastic will last years as I paid more than normal in the hope that this would be my trimmer for years. But it does have a 2 year warranty.

Is the blade self sharpening? Or does it dull with use. There is another paper trimmer on the market that is .... my reason for asking.

I’m sure it is. I’ve had this cutter for many years and have never had to try to sharpen it. Still cuts beautifully.

Does this cutter allow the 12 x 12 paper to fit all the way down for cutting. I saw another reviewer said it is a problem. Thank you!

We recommend not cutting anything heavier than 80 lbs paper weight cardstock.

I cut med. weight chipboard all the time with this cutter, never had a problem. I am a bit rough on tools though and when I cut this kind of stuff I do hit the guillotine fast and hard. This cutter is a real workhorse. I've used it for 11 years now, and it's still sharp as a tack.
