    Tim Holtz Maxi Guillotine Trimmer

I have been struggling with many paper trimmers and the poor ragged cuts so when I saw this cutter on sale I took the plunge. Am I glad I did, now I get smooth edges every time. The reason I did not give 5 stars was the directions on the box say cut paper and card stock. I have not had the opportunity to see will it cut chip board if so I would give it 5stars. If you have been thinking about purchasing Tim Holtz Guillotine think no more you will be glad you did. Happy Crafting.

    my FAVE trimmer

I just replaced my 10 year old Tonic Studio Guillotine with this newer version. The previous served me well, but was just getting noisier. I'm so happy with this smooth new tool. I trim a LOT of paper for my planner and this is super reliable. I love the plastic shield that holds the paper in place and doesn't allow it to slide while being cut.

    TH Trimmer

One of my newest arsenal of tools. I finally decided to buy a new trimmer because I have a really heavy metal trimmer that I’ve been dragging around to Scrapbooking weekends. not fun. (I’m donating my old trimmer to a local charity.)
This works so smoothly with the double pressure plates and is so much lighter. Im looking forward to using it everyday too.
    Thanks you.

    LOVE this trimmer!

I have purchased many paper trimmers in the past and this was my first Guillotine trimmer. I love it! It cuts a nice crisp edge when cutting single sheets of paper. I tried cutting multiple sheets of paper at one time and this trimmer would not cut through multiple sheets without tearing the paper. When cutting a single sheet of cardstock or 110# paper, it cuts beautifully. Even the tiniest sliver of paper is cut perfectly. I would recommend this trimmer.

    Sharp!

Yes...it is very sharp and I love how I can cut paper so smoothly with it...but I struggle to get straight cuts! If I put the paper (8 1/2 x 11) directly against the top edge the score marks on the trimmer that mark the grid are invariably just a tad off from square. I'm very particular about my card stock being cut straight and this about drives me crazy! If anyone has some tips for me I'd love to hear them!

    Best trimmer ever!!

I am so thrilled with this paper trimmer! I have had a variety of trimmers in my years as a paper crafter but this one is by far my favorite. It cuts perfectly straight with a very clean edge no frayed looking edges on my card stock. I can even cut tiny 1/16 “ off of a paper with no problems and I can cut a few sheets at a time, which is great when I’m pre cutting a stack of card bases. This is my favorite tool in my craft room for sure!

    Love this Trimmer

I've seen several crafters on Youtube and crafting groups use this trimmer and have read several reviews online. I waited MONTHS for this trimmer to come in stock due to CV-19 it was delayed and it did not disappoint. It cuts beautifully, in my opinion and i just have to get use to using both of the places to hold my paper down or it slips slightly. No more frayed edges or having to change blades every month, as I cut a lot of paper.

    trimmer is perfect

I started using a smaller guillotine trimmer a few months ago & loved how it cut with such precision. On the recommendation of a few YouTuber's...I decided to try this trimmer. Now I can cut 12x12 paper & cardstock with precision & I don't have to worry about ragged edges. I truly love this trimmer.

Great paper trimmer...accurate, lightweight, east to use!

I have a heavy duty commercial paper trimmer but it's bulky, very heavy and takes up a lot of room in my craft studio. I wanted something that would store easily, with a smaller footprint and still cut accurately. This new Tonic trimmer is perfect. I store it under my work table and just pull it out when needed. The set-up of the extension arm is easy and it is extremely accurate. I make intricate cards and have had no problem with 1/8" measurements when cutting. It does a good job on everything from printer paper to heavier watercolor paper. I still need my big cutter for chipboard, etc. but the Tonic has become my day-to-day trimmer. It's become my favorite new tool!

Questions & Answers
  • I just ordered this guillotine (my first guillotine) and I am totally sold on the product because of the reviews however I was wondering if it is possible to use it on 52pt chipboard or lets say the limit of chipboard thickness? Thank you so much for the help!   By: evangelina.nave (13-Jun-20) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • With our in-house testing, we have found that the maximum thickness that cuts effectively is 3 sheets of 90 lb card stock. Any thicker, the cut is not good. Our recommendation is that you use a rotary trimmer to cut thick chipboard. By: Tonic Studios (15-Jun-20) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. • I'm not sure how thick 52pt chipboard is but this trimmer is designed to cut various thicknesses of cardstock. I've cut up to 120 lb paper just fine but haven't tried any ticker - I don't imagine this trimmer could handle anything too thick. You'd have to try, just don't force the blade! • How many sheets of 80 or 100 or 110 lb. card stock will it cut with one pass?   By: maryluddite78 (11-Apr-18) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • I tested my Tim Holtz-12.25 inch Maxi Guillotine Trimmer for you. I tried my test on 110 pd. card stock. I cut 6 out with no trouble. Tim said in his u-tube a couple of sheets. Tim is correct when he said a couple of sheets, because it cut like butter with 1 or 2. I had to use a little more mussel to bring the blade threw all 6.
The cutter is not as beefy as the one I replaced with this trimmer. I thought it might be as strong, thinking they probably are pretty much the same. I was wrong, this is more light weight.
What caught my eye on this one was because its narrow. My space in my craft room is so limited that I liked that it doesn't take up space like the big ones. It has a arm that will pull out if you need it for a 12 by 12 sheet of paper, but than you can push it right back in. I would not call this a commercial grade cutter, so if that's what your looking for than this wouldn't do, craft at home than this is for you! Hope I helped in your finding the right cutter for your projects! By: hoag (16-Apr-18) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!

  • Hi,
I need to remove the finger guard on my 8.5 guillotine trimmer to clean it (got double-sided tape stuck there). The guard doesn't want to come off and I don't want to force it in fear of breaking it. What is the correct way to remove it?   By: JvV (30-Apr-21) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • Hi JvV,
This is really easy. Push down on the finger guard to hold it down while twisting the chrome cap nuts to take them off. Once the nuts are remove, the guard will lift right off. To put it on, do the same thing in reverse. NOTE: To clean the adhesive off, DO NOT use anything with acetone in it as it will melt the plastic and make it foggy so you cannot see through it. Goo Gone has a CITRUS adhesive remover that is safe to use and it has NO ACETONE. By: Tonic Studios (03-May-21) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! • My guillotine is blunt. Ive had it for a few years and used it quite a lot but now its unusable. I cant find replacement blades. Is there a way of safely sharpening the blade? Or replacing it? If its disposable (ie needs to be replaced when the blade goes blunt) I wont purchase a replacement.   By: Ilinna (10-Aug-23) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! • Hello. Per Tonic Studios -
Do NOT sharpen this blade!!!!! If you call Tonic at (844) 866-4287 they can sell you a blade. Please have your trimmer with you when calling so they can confirm that you need a blade. • I am contemplating between this 12.25" trimmer and the Tonic 12" wide-based trimmer. Is having a narrow base uncomfortable while cutting 12" papers with the paper slumping down?

https://www.tonic-studios.com/products/craft-guillotine-12-maxi-wide-base-454-157e?_pos=4&_sid=902b143cd&_ss=r   By: preethigudivada (01-Apr-21) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • Hello Preethigudivada,

This really comes down to how you use your trimmer and space. On how you use it, if you paper craft outside of your home, then you might want the Tim Holtz 1980e. This is much more portable than the 12x12 trimmer. The other advantage to this is space. If you have limited storage and work space this is certainly the trimmer for you. Regarding the "paper slumping", this trimmer does come with a measurement extension to measure out a full 12", however the paper will slump a bit. The spring-loaded clear plastic finger bar does hold your paper in place when cutting as well as protects your fingers.

On the 157e 12x12 trimmer, it has the same blade and spring loaded bar but has a full 12x12 base that allows you to lay all your papers out flat making it a bit easier to cut all papers over 6" wide. I know many crafters have both trimmers and are pleased that they have them. I would say that the real advantage of this trimmer is if you are doing a lot of cutting. Lets say you are making Christmas Cards and are cutting a bunch of 8.5x11 paper in half, having the larger cutting bed makes it easier to put your paper in to cut receptively.

I hope this help you. By: Tonic Studios (02-Apr-21) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!

  • Are the measurements accurate ? I ask because of the photo.
The middle ruler lines up with the grooves on the base. But if you follow any of the grooves up they don't line up with the top ruler measurements.
Because our postal service is so bad right now I don't want to go thru the hassle of trying to return it if I'm not able to get an accurate measurement.
Thanks 😊   By: carolynjayne (16-Mar-21) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • Hello Carolynjayne,
All three rulers have METRIC on the top half and INCHES under it on the bottom half ALL INCHES marks line up with the graph. The ruler at the top of the trimmer is raised above the cutting surface so if you look at it from the side, it appears not to line up. Look straight down and you can see that it does line up. By: Tonic Studios (16-Mar-21) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!

    • Hello Carolynjayne,
I am going to assume you are wanting to measure in inches, not metric. The reason I say this is the ruler in the center also has METRIC measurements on the top half of the ruler. My guess is that you are looking at the top half of the ruler which is metric. The bottom half is in INCHES. The INCHES lines do line up with the grid. I hope that this addresses your issue. If not, please call us at (209) 253-0596. By: Tonic Studios (16-Mar-21) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!

  • sometimes I get fuzzy edges... sometimes perfectly clean edges... even with the same sheet of cardstock... what am i doing wrong/different?   By: Dawn MD (24-Oct-20) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • Hello Dawn MD,

There are three things you need to do to get a clean cut every time.
      1. It is VERY important that once you have inserted the paper, YOU MUST hold the paper in place with the clear guard.
      2. When pulling the blade handle down, you must pull it "straight down" as if you were pushing this down this handle.
      3. Pull the blade down at a consistent speed. DO NOT GO REALLY SLOW.

If you are cutting cardstock, do not do over 2 pieces at a time. By: Tonic Studios (26-Oct-20) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!
