    Great rotary trimmer

I was not happy with my current trimmer and was looking for something else. I saw this. After hearing. different reviews of top card makers. I decided to try it, and can tell you that I am thrilled with it. It gives a crisp cut, and is easy to use. The extension works great to fit 12x12" paper. The markings are very clear. The rotary cutter moves smoothly. I am thrilled with it, and look forward to using it for a long time.

This Rotary Trimmer is the Best

This is the second Tim Holtz Rotary Trimmer I have purchased. One reason was the 50% off, the second was that I use my original trimmer to cut heavy chip board and magnetic sheets, so it gets major heavy duty usage and the blade doesn’t cut paper as smoothly after cutting these other mediums. That said, this trimmer outperforms any others I have used (and I have used them all!) Highly recommend. Five stars!

    I am loving this!

Did I need another paper trimmer? Yes and no. I have a full size rotary cutter, but the measurements rubbed off and I often find that because of that, my cuts are crooked. So I don't use it very much. I have a guillotine paper cutter, but it takes up room. I like this one because it's light weight, cuts smoothly, rulers fold in so it doesn't take up a lot of room. Very nice!

    Tim Holtz New Rotary Cutter

This cutter is absolutely AMAZING! It cuts through VERY thick 110# cardstock like it's text weight paper! I'm loving this new cutter! I really like that it has the plastic guard that not only protects your fingers but it firmly holder paper in place to get great accurate cuts. Thank you, Tim, for taking the time to design this new cutter. And thank you, Scrapbook.com, for putting it at such a great introductory price.

Needed to learn the right technique

I had high expectations, given alll the buzz this trimmer has received, and so I was surprised and concerned when my first few cuts through cardstock resulted in torn, rather than smoothly cut, edges. Watched the TH video and realized I was pushing down on the carriage and the correct technique is to lightly press the carriage to the left so that the blade rolls against the edge of the channel. Tried that and got perfect cuts. Excited to finally have something that can cut everything I use!

    pretty good

It does cut a straight line and does cut several pieces of paper at once. Handy when cutting mats.

Pretty good but could still use some improvements.

Mainly it's still got a gap without measurement lines at the transition spot.

Still a little bit hard to see your cut line, but better than some.

The height from the main board to the fold out arms is so big that it's hard to tell if you have your paper lined up. You can't lay your paper flat against the ruler. If you move your head a little instead of being directly over the paper edge, you can change the measurement accuracy.

The fact that the clear plastic guard does not lift up bugs me a lot.

Would be even better if either the whole cutting arm lifted up or the blade rotated up so that you don't have to keep moving the blade out of the way to place a piece of paper. You can't slide a piece of paper in without moving the blade all the way up or down out of the way.

It is light weight enough to travel with and seems sturdy.

    Best of the best

I just received my rotary trimmer and rushed to try it out. I specifically tried to cut the elusive 6 1/2 inch cut that has caused problems for others. I found that if you run your paper past the 6 inch mark and to the end of the plastic that your paper is butted up against, it measures out to exactly 6 1/2 inches. Every. Single. Time. As for the arm extension being not exactly in line with the rest of the platform, I had no problem whatsoever making an 8 inch cut perfectly each time. I would suggest perhaps those who have had problems with each of these cuts maybe should adjust the angle at which they are viewing the paper. I love this trimmer and find it better than any trimmer I have ever used including other rotary trimmers as well as chop (guillotine) trimmers. I highly recommend this trimmer.

    Not perfect, but close

I had some reservations about this trimmer (not a fan of rotary trimmers, much prefer guillotines) but when it was offered at a special reduced price I decided to do some research because I'd read some negative reviews. I watched Tim Holtz' introductory video and paid attention to his tips.

The trimmer is quite lightweight which is good for me since I often have to move my trimmer out of the way on my limited space worktop. My early cutting attempts did produce some of the jagged edges that many had complained about, but when I paid attention and used the tips Tim gave, it cut perfectly. I've used it for about a week and still occasionally forget to lightly press the blade holder toward the cutting edge, but my mistakes are becoming fewer.

I've read several complaints about not having a 6 1/2" mark for cutting since that point is where the main body of the cutter ends before continuing on the extension. There are a couple of solutions to that — let's say you're cutting a piece of 12 x 12 paper. Just stubract 6 1/2" from 12 and cut at 5 1/2. That leaves you with a piece that measures 6 1/2 for your project. The same approach works for any piece longer than 6 1/4" (the last marked measurement on the cutter). The other solution is to place a mark 1/2" past the last 1/4" mark on the base grid. Both solutions work. I tried to add a photo but it won't show up here.

    Fantastic Trimmer

Tim Holtz products are always high quality and this trimmer is slick! Cuts beautifully various thicknesses and I like the 1/4" grid. It is lightweight too! I haven't tried cutting fabric, leather, or aluminum, but it cuts the grunge paper and cereal boxes. You won't be disappointed!

Finally, a trimmer that checks all the boxes

Well, except one. There is no marking for a 6.5 measure. That is unfortunate but it can be overcome. Just received my trimmer and I'm loving it. It is a convenient size and lightweight. The gear feature makes it easy to move the blade to cut. (Trust me. I have another brand similar to this and it's very heavy and hard to cut even a small piece of cardstock or paper.) This trimmer easily makes clean cuts on all the things the TH video says it does including photo paper. Wasn't sure about that clear piece not lifting up to place the paper, but it's a great feature. Paper easily slides under and with fewer motions to be ready to cut. Also, you can see the cutting line if you are not measuring but trimming an edge or sliver from an item. Perfect trimmer for multi media scrapbooking and cards.

update: I happen to have a 6 inch (by .75 inch) Wescott flat metal ruler that is perfect for extending dimensions over 6 inches if you need to be extremely precise. Sad that this great trimmer is difficult to measure accurately past 6 inches but I think this is a worthwhile work around.

  • Will this cut .057" and or .030" chipboard?   By: Judiellen Art (24-Mar-23) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • Does NOT cut 0.057" (57pt). Will cut the 0.030" (30pt). By: lois1262 (04-Apr-23) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!

    • Tonic indicates that this will cut .050" chipboard, so .057" is just a tad thicker (7/1000") and maybe it will cut it. .030" should be fine. By: Tonic Studios (24-Mar-23) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!

It appears that you can cut 6 wide without extending arm. Then between 6 and 7 you have to guess. Unless I am wrong?
And $15.99 for a replacement blade? My main question, is how is this different from other cutters similar with less expensive cost and replacement blades?   By: User (15-Mar-23) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • The biggest difference is that the blade is gear driven, not pressure driven. If you just push or pull the blade cartridge it will cut the paper. The gears turn the blade as it is pushed or pulled. Regarding the replacement cartridge, because the blade is gear driven, the blade is not sold by itself because if replaced incorrectly it could jam. Plus there is a safety issue in handling just the blade. By: Tonic Studios (15-Mar-23) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!

    • Yes you have to guess for 6.5”. It’s disappointing. By: herondrums (25-Mar-23) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!

  • I really want to like this, but I wish it had a full 12x12 platform.

Is there guess work involved with measurement at the hinge where the arms extend? That 6 inch mark is pretty important. It's a huge problem with cutters that have extending arms.   By: cedowning (29-Nov-24) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!
    • Hello, thank you for reaching out. The 6" mark doesn't really pose any guesswork. I would say that it is more of the 6 1/2" mark since this falls right where the edge is for the trimmer and the arm. Tim Holtz has a great video on YouTube specifically about his trimmers and how he works with them regarding the measurements and arms.
