organizing ribbon ???????

I just made a ribbon organizer box last night. It is similar to the ones that Target had, and I have also seen them for sale on E...

I took a photo storage box (you could also use a shoe box and cover it with pretty paper), made two rows of holes on each side of the box (approx. 1 inch apart), then inserted and hammered grommets (large eyelets available in the sewing section of most stores) into the holes for a finished look.

Since most of my ribbon is loose, not on spools, I just threw the ribbon in the box and then poked an end through one of the grommets.

The box I made has 19 holes on each side (10 on bottom row & 9 on top row). So I can use one box for 38 different ribbons.

Be careful, Ladies. Wood has acid in it. Wood clothes pins have acid and will breakdown your ribbons over time. They will also transfer the acid to your pages. No big deal if you scrap with random items anyway, but if you are a fanatic about acid-free it is not so good.

I am in the midst of researching and implementing a new ribbon and fiber storage system, too. I don't have one picked out yet...

The plastic clothespins are safe to use I think. I go through ribbon so fast it wouldn't matter for me though.

I bought a wire basket from Walmart. It's about 6 x 12. I ran a dowel rod down the center of it and put my spools of ribbon on it. The end of each spool runs through one of the holes in the basket. Works great!

i have to keep my supplies in small spaces. i bought a fishing bait organizer (14"x10"x2") and floss cards, wrapped the ribbon around the floss cards and store them in the organizer. i store my bulkier embellishments, buttons, and pigments in the organizers, too. My only objection is that i might have to iron out ribbon occasionally.

I found that with floss cards, I wouldn't take the time to wrap them back up after I used ribbon, and that they left kinks in my ribbon, so I moved to a ziploc baggie system - the kind with a hole punched in the corner and then you put them all on a big binder ring. I love using baggies because most of my ribbon is ~1yd, not spools, and I don't have to worry about kinks, and can just stuff the remainder back in the bag . At this point, however, I've been motivated by some of the storage systems I've seen and think I want to keep my ribbons in a drawer set rather than on rings, with one drawer for red-orange-yellow, one for green-blue-purple, and one for white-brown-black. but, I haven't totally sorted out how the baggies and the drawer method combine. it's one of my goals when I get home tonight!
