It doesn't take long for Mother Nature to work her weathering magic on things that are not her own. I went out to the pasture this evening to visit with Java. Now that she's my only horse -- for one more week - she gets Dolce's personal time in the evening as well as her own personal time in the morning.

We walked down to the pond where I found this on the rocks. It's the last shoe that Dolce pulled - on August 18, a Friday. It's sitting there looking like she just stepped out of it, except it's upside down ... we're looking at the bottom side of it. The 3-degree wedge pad is still firmly attached to it. It's bittersweet to see it in such good shape, aside from the rusting that occurs when water and weather meet steel in the unprotected wild.

Horseshoes are considered universal lucky charms. This one wasn't so lucky - not for me, and not for the mare who wore it. I photographed it heels down because for me and Dolce, the luck just ran out of it.

Yes, I picked it up. It's on the shelf by my back door where I hang my halters. I'm not sure what I intend to do with it, but leaving it to just rust away isn't in the plan.
