  • Hello
I have just taken delivery of a Spellbinders Platinum. Watched a couple of YouTube videos on using the machine and also referring to the base plate tried to emboss using a regular folder and nothing at all! It says to use base plate, folder with cardstock and one cutting plate - no pressure felt and no embossing at all - what am I doing wrong?   By: Sue Olsson (12-Sep-19) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! • Spellbinders discontinued the 3D Embossing Plate. I have tried unsuccessfully to get an answer from Spellbinders on best sandwich options for use with 3D embossing folders. Does anyone have suggestions on an alternative plate or sandwich options. It is frustrating that this new machine has this listed on their plate guide, says it needs to purchased separately but has been discontinued.   By: cyndiadamsnv (22-Jul-20) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! • I was equally frustrated by the absence of a plate for 3D embossing. Currently, I use a sandwich that consists of the platform, the embossing folder, and a sturdy piece of cardboard that I found in my stash. The cardboard is 1/8 of an inch thick and I cut it down to fit on the plate. The important thing is to find a piece of cardboard that is hard enough to apply pressure, similar to the cover of a hard bound novel. By: MGCOWART (02-Aug-20) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! I am considering purchasing a die cut/embossing machine. I would like to purchase the most versatile, easy use, with the largest platform. I prefer a motorized version. • Hi, I do not have a motorized die cutting machine. I was concerned that the thickness of the item I would be die cutting may not go through the machine. I would check to make sure the motor is large enough to accommodate any thickness (within reason). I just love the large Platinum die cutting machine I have. It is manually operated. I had a motorized version not this type I did like it but it is not as big as the one I have now. I really like my new one because you can do a lot more with this one because the platinum is bigger and can do a lot more types of materials. I think you will really like it. Is this machine going to take me to the bank with all the unlisted "needed" accessory mats??   By: dianaricker (04-Aug-16) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This question has been reported. Thank you!

    • Yes, it will take you to the bank as you are still required to purchase separately certain mats, plates etc. Let's be honest and say it as it is, have you yet met the manufacturer that provides everything is needed for you to fully enjoy a craft tool? They all have their own marketing scheme to further create the need to continue purchasing parts related to that specific tool until you finally have everything you need to fully enjoy your new "toy". If you have already purchased everything you need for your sizzix machine, just stick to it. By: SandieGeek (19-Apr-17) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! • When I bought my Gemini it came with all the mats available, everything I needed. It works like a dream all the time but occasionally, I have trouble with 3d embossing and have to try many different sandwiches. I was considering the spellbinders manual machine for this reason, but now I hear they have discontinued the plate that makes 3d embossing possible! Does anyone know which machine is easiest/best for full sized 3d embossing? Thanks! By: aseletzky (08-Feb-22) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Do you plan on releasing an electronic version of this machine? I love the larger base plate but have too much trouble with crank machines do to arm health issues. Since you retired the Grand Calibur and Dies, will you be launching any new larger dies for the Platinum? • According to Spellbinders if your Platinum came/comes with the standard cutting plates, if you contact them with proof of purchase they will send you the XL cutting plates only. • I'm a die cutting newbie and I want to get this right so I can purchase one machine and be done...
Is there an advantage of the larger Platinum (8.5") over the Platinum 6? Is the larger one easier to turn the handle, or more sturdy on its base because of its increased weight? Every die I've found would fit on the smaller machine's platform, and if I'm not mass producing or cutting multiple shapes at once, why would I need the larger machine? Will clear cutting plates last longer / warp less if I use plates and the machine that are closest to the size of the dies I"m cutting? I assume the Glimmer machine would work in either machine even though it's designed for the Platinum 6. It does seem that accessories/replacement plates are easier to find for the Platinum 6 than for the large machine, so maybe that's the only plus.   By: tmassey0316 (13-Nov-20) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! • There is an advantage if you have large cutting dies like Tattered Lace or Tonic. Some of their dies will only work in a machine that can take that larger size. They will not fit on a normal 6 inch platform. I also have some embossing folders that are 8 inch by 8 inch. They also have to be used on a larger cutting and embossing platform. If you buy a larger machine, you know that you will be fine in the future if you end up with some of those large dies. By: chgustner (23-Nov-20) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! Report Inappropriate This Answer has been reported. Thank you!

    • There isn't an advantage except you have more room to cut more. I have many die cutting machines and I love this one the best. I love how you can buy the foil machine that you use with this machine also. Scapbook.com has those new plates that I would recommend to you ,you use with one plate and the new platform will replace the other plate so no warping!!!! Or the smaller one I have. I do agree the polarizing issue is a pain. And may just start using washi tape or something. I have a Platinum 6 and the Larger Platinum. I have the same concern with both of the machines. When I put a Spellbinders, regular size die ( let's say the small die of the month club) through the machine; the machine has a very hard turn and it seems as if the gears are going to snap apart. I owned a Big Shot and a Big Shot plus and know the noises that it makes and that they can be a bit disconcerting to the new user: I guess I need to be reassured if this is normal.   By: User (08-Jun-19) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! • Hi, I've been using my larger Platinum with great success. I am wondering if it is brand new and the crackling you hear is from the pressure on the acrylic plates. Spellbinder Dies work beautifully with the regular Platform and 2 acrylic plates. However, if you are die cutting with the gold dies they require a different set up. It says what you need on the package. Hope this helps. Sara PS Do you align the die so that one corner goes in first? If it is a rectangular or square die, you'll need to turn it so that it rolls through with the point of any edge going under first. By: Joiseygirl3 (10-Jun-19) Helpful Answer?  Yes  |  No Thank you! I am a new owner of a soellbinder platinum machine.
I would like to emboss card stock in between an embossing folder .

    • I dont know if you've actually used a magnetic platform or not, but I have abandoned mine altogether, as they unfortunately tend to become polarized.......meaning, if you place the die on it, they tend to flip around, all over the place, ruining paper at times. This is especially aggravating if you are trying to place more than one die to cut at a time.......I would rather use micropore, washi or even post-it tape....while the concept is great, they have turned out to be more of a pain than they are worth......sorry Sizzix, but that's the truth.......now, the diamond base plate is another story, especially for intricate dies, although I and my compadres have notice the top cutting plate warps much faster when using it.......ah me. i teach, and do sample boards for well known stamp company, so, I die cut A LOT!!!!!!!! • No, it is not. You would have to purchase that separately. I haven't decided if I wish to do that yet. • It is perfectly normal for the dies to etch the acrylic cutting plates. These will need to be replaced over time. If you are using a shim and it won't go through the machine, you will need to remove this so the sandwich isn't too thick. Hope this helps! • I haven't used mine yet but it seems very sturdy. After reading the comments, though, I'm unsure if it is a standard or xl (not that I really understand the advantage of that yet either). On the box: Spellbinders Platinum 6, which I'm guessing is 6" and one post mentions 7" and another 8.5", and I'm assuming that it means it's standard. I'm a little confused. It doesn't even make sense to me how you can put something through which is larger than the space allocated.   By: injustamin (01-Apr-17) Helpful Question?  Yes  |  No Thank you! • There are two types of Spellbinders Platinum: Platinum 6 and Platinum.
      - The Platinum 6 has an opening width of 6", which means that you can only fit dies up to 6". The cutting plates are approximately 6" x 8.5". This is the standard size.
      - The Platinum has an 8.5" opening width and the cutting plates are approximately 8.5" x 12". This is the XL size.
