This is my first experience with a Cricut product and I must say I am a bit confused. The directions for some projects are non-existent as far as I can see but I will call the customer service to get clarification. So far, the machine is working correctly and for that I am excited. As time goes on and I learn a bit more, I am sure it will be as good as I anticipate.

Yes. You need to change the dial to "custom" on the Cricut then choose either chipboard light or heavy on your computer under custom materials.

I'm confused about the ipad app. Do you have to have an ipad to use this? I have a Windows 10 laptop and use Android devices.

I don't own a Cameo so I can't really say much about it. All I know is that I love my Cricut Explore. I love the idea of being able to upload images and be able to cut or draw it using the Explore. This has been very helpful for me in the Digital Stamps I use in my card making. There are also free downloadable cut files out there on the net. I recently just cut a layered Paw Patrol image for my son's school project. I am not saying the Cameo cannot do this. I can only speak for the things I created with the Explore.

I'm thinking of purchasing a Cricut Explore Air. Can I just buy digital cartridges for my computer and have them available to use indefinitely or do I have to have a subscription that costs $9.99 per month?

You can purchase cartridges direct from the manufacturer, Joann's, Michaels or SVGls. If you buy from a seller or individual make sure none are "linked" to a Gypsy or to their account because that is the only way you would not be able to use them. If you buy a cartridge, there is a place on the machine to link these to your internet account. I have over 60 cartridges and never use Cricut's monthly access because of all of mine as well as the free ones they offer. The internet site is Cricut Design Space and you can take a tour without having an account. See if you like it. I did!! Am very pleased with my purchase!!

In addition, you can buy single images from the image library without having the subscription. You can also upload SVG and other graphics files for no cost.
