These are metallic wax pastes. They highlight pieces nicely as well as solid color as well. This product smells good too. Not like old shoe polish like most other brands. A bit more pricey, but a nice addition to my coloring products.
Great color, easy to use. Adds so much style to mixed media projects, cards etc. Adds excellent definition to 3D embossing.

Can you paint over the waxes?

I have finished several projects with the wax, and then decided I didn't like the color. I've painted over the wax with gesso, and then refinished with a different color wax. It seems to work just fine. Even though gesso seems to work, I haven't tried just regular paint. It might not have the grabbing power of gesso.
