I cannot give you specifics as to WHEN they make a better scissor cut but I keep them close by and use them often. I LOVE that these have such a long blade that you can cut a large area at once. The only drawback is that the blades are so sharp I find it difficult to make a straight cut or control the cutting over any length greater than 4". The blade just continues moving forward without any pressure so I tend to curve my cut line.
I just used these scissors on an old, worn out hoodie and was surprised that these scissors didn't seem to be as easy to use as I had hoped! I buy Tim's products all of the time and always rate them the highest, but either they aren't sharp enough or don't do well on anything thicker than paper. Sorry Tim! I had to tell the truth.
I previously bought Tim's mini snips (which I love for fussy cutting) but wanted a larger pair for quickly cutting paper and cardstock down for die cutting so it would fit through my Vagabond. These are perfect for that purpose. I've also cut chipboard with these scissors and they are great for that as well. Love that the blades sharpen themselves so I don't have to worry about dull scissors.

I finally made the plunge and bought the 9.5" Tim Holtz Tonic scissors and I'm so glad I did. I've watched so many online card makers use them and thought they'd be handy to have. After keeping an eye out for them at my local craft store and never seeing them stocked, I decided to buy them from Scrapbook.com. They are heavy-duty and really well made. They cut through paper easily and while they are large, they are not unwieldy. Would recommend to any crafter.
I already owned the smaller version of these so getting the larger pair was a no brainer. They literally cut through everything. I bought multiple pairs because I didnt want the one in my craft room to go missing ;)

These are the best scissors and equally as good as the smaller version! I own 2 pairs of the smaller, only because I find I misplace them under project papers etc and I intend on ordering another of this size as well!! Superior product Tim Holtz!

I love my Tim Holtz scissors. I use it whenever I have a big job to do. For example cutting thick heavy material. I would highly recommend this scissors.

In Australia I had bought a small pair with red handles, but much prefer the black set.
