The clear ruler works great to be able to see what item you might want to align with another item, think it should be one included in the Make art stay-tion.
This ruler is see-through and has a strong magnetic force. I love this ruler and use it all the time. I actually prefer this one and don't like the one it actually comes with. The one it comes with is real flimsy bends and magnet is not near as strong it also curves up so to use it as a straight edge is not easy for me. If you purchase the make art stay-tion, which is great, I highly recommend you purchase this ruler to go with it. It would be nice if they put this one with it instead of the white one but until then, buy this one.

Hello. Yes, the Wendy Vecchi Make Art Perfect Aligning 12-Inch Ruler will work with a glass mat with a steel backing, provided the magnetic attraction can pass through the layer of glass. Because this ruler contains built-in magnets, it will be attracted to surfaces like steel. However, the thickness of your specific glass mat will impact how tightly it locks down.
