What is the Glass Media Mat?
Use the mat for projects that you use a lot of glue, paint, gesso and anything else; your mess won’t get in the way of creating your masterpiece. When you’re done creating, simply remove the craft mat and wash it off, it’s that easy! You can clean it by placing it in your dishwasher, rinsing it off in your sink or you can clean it with solvents. You can also blend your paints, markers, inks and more; use the black glass portion of the mat to create an easy motion of movement on your surface to blend your ink or other mediums. Or on the white palette area, use a wet paintbrush or water brush and pick up your chosen color; start having some fun by mixing your watercolors, distress inks, crayons, inks and more on the palette area. Water-based mediums will never dry on the surface. Try using your cube inks and mix and match your color choices for endless creative possibilities!
Features of the Glass Media Mat
Glass Media Mat Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Does the media mat come with the scraper and straight edge tool?
A: The scraper and straight edge tools are sold separately. – Tonic Studios
Q: I am left handed. Would this be a useful Media Mat for me to use? Or is this for only right handed crafters?
A: I am left handed as well, and I see NO PROBLEM in just turning the mat around in the opposite direction. Also using the Slide rule for cutting, just use it from the bottom and opposite side edge of the mat, very simple solutions. This mat can totally be used and enjoyed by both right and left handed crafters. Hope this helps. – nurseman1951
Q: I have just read that the glass media mat, has several scratches when using a cutting knife, so I wanted to know if this is the case?
A: The glass media mats will scratch when a knife is used on them, it won’t hurt the glass, but it will scratch it. – Tonic Studios
Q: Can you use alcohol markers on the mat?
A: Please note that we indicate on the packaging that alcohol markers could stain this mat. – Tonic Studios
Q: I wonder if it would be safe to use the Fuse tool on this mat?
A: I do not see any issue with using the WeR’s Fuse Tool, the heat will not affect the glass. However, be careful with the fine tip so that you do not scratch the glass. – Tonic Studios
Q: Can I use polymer clay on the mat?
A: Even though I do not craft with polymer clay, I have read several articles about what the best surfaces for a clay artist are to utilize. For the serious artist the surfaces of choice are Glass and Marble. This is because they stay cool and make using the clay easier. – Tonic Studios
Q: Is the non-stick mat for the side included? How much pressure can you put on the glass? If you are stamping on one of those plastic 8ft. long tables (that "give" when you stamp on them and give you partial images) will using this media mat solve that problem?
A: The non-stick mat is included. I do not have an actual measurement of how much pressure you can put on the glass, but I have used this item on a plastic folding table and it makes a perfect surface for stamping. You should have no problem when pushing down on a plastic table. – Tonic Studios
Q: Is there a sleeve available for transporting it to crops?
A: If you check out the Tim Holtz Creativation 2018 You Tube video on this, the answer is “yes, the box” there is no plan for a sleeve due to the weight. – ladypisces3161
Perfect Companion Accessories (sold separately) for the Glass Media Mat
Media Scraper – The scraper is made of glass and won’t break down and it doesn’t dent. Use the scraper on the non-stick craft mat to remove glue, dry paint and more. And it features a Kushgrip ergonomic handle for comfort.
Media Edge – This edge is not used for measuring, but instead features a lip on the end to allow the edge to hang off the side of the mat. It gives you a straight line for drawing, stamping and aligning your photos. One side of the Media Edge features a tapered edge that makes it easy to create straight lines using your pens and markers. The other side has a metal rod embedded into the edge that’s used for cutting; you can use your craft knife to achieve a straight line against the metal edge.
Replacement crafts mats are also available, sold separately.

The best investment I’ve made to my scrapbooking craft room!!!!
I love that I can have all the room to work on the matbthat I need . I’m not the best judge in my measuments so the concept of each square is perfect.
I also liked the inking space that he added I can have all my choice of diffrent distress products right there for me to just be able to mix and match everything is a crafters dream come true!!!!
Tim Holtz you’ve taking my inspiration to the next level
I just love this mat! I was a little skeptical about purchasing it
and thought I may not like it. Well I’m so happy I did! Not only does it clean easily it is perfect for all my craft needs. So far I have used it for my inks, watercolours, caulk silicone moulds, mixed media, and it cleans right up!
I’ve even bought a dry erase marker to make quick notes on the white area No regrets here.
I was really excited about this mat and have happily used it for about four months. I recently got companion tool set with the scraper and edge guide. That's when I became disappointed. Because the lines on the mat are not applied straight if you use the two together as they were intended you won't get a straight line.
I emailed Tonic Studios explaining the problem and got the following response:
"Victor Musino (Tonic Studios USA inc)

Hello,
The back of the glass mat is a decal that is placed by hand on the back of the glass mat. Unfortunately, this will not be perfectly straight."
I find that unacceptable. They were made to work together, yet if you use them together you end up with a flawed project! UGH!!!
I have replaced my much-loved magnetic self-healing mat with this and I adore it. I can cut, paint, stamp, glue, whatever and everything come right off. And the grid lines help me keep everything in line. I do NOT recommend the tool bundle however. The poor quality of the ruler keeps this from being a 5 star review. I was looking to replace my T ruler with this one and it sits crooked to the mat by nearly 1/4 inch. Doesn’t even come close to matching the lines and would really mess up anything I tried to cut with it. Don’t spend the extra money; just buy the glass mat.

I really like this tool. It makes my work surface a bit more tidy as I work. it gives a "border" to the area I have to work in. much nicer to have areas "assigned" to certain areas. the glue area, the creating area. As Tim said it keeps the card making area better controlled and clean. It also encourages me to keep the glue, paint, marker, cutting areas separate and my cards less in danger of getting into the glue or paint or ink. I find I work a bit neater which helps me turn out a better product. I love it.
I love this mat, the only reason it didn't get five stars is because the little bumper guards that come with it are too loose and keep coming off. Other than that it is everything I wanted in a mat, easy to see the measurements and the little rubber grips on the other side prevent it from sliding, now my biggest fear is that I will drop a punch on it and it will shatter into a million pieces, yes I am that clumsy sometimes. So keeping my fingers crossed that I will have this thing for a long, long time. Is there a carrier for it? That would be awesome too if you are listening Tim Holtz,
I LOVE IT. Exactly as advertised. It is heavy enough that i feel like i have a solid base for my projects and die cutting machines but not to heavy to move if I need more space. The surface is quite large. Big enough to put my entire 12 x 12 scrapbook page on and still have the side area to work on. It will make my scraping area so much easier to maintain. The little feet on the bottom are just a little bit off the table so i don't feel like i'm working way above my desk surface But I'm not worried about losing items under it. My projects seem to creep in on me too.
it arrived at my overseas location in a week.. Normally it takes 4-6 weeks for packages.
This weekend I was able to spend several hours scrapbooking on my new Tim Holtz Glass Media Mat. Upon first inspection I was not that impressed with the quality of the workmanship. The printing is on a sheet that is stuck to the back of the glass and there are bubbles in it, especially around the rubber feet. The glass seems to be sticky around the edges where the printed backing was applied. Also, the white mat that sits on top of the right side was crumpled up, leaving wrinkles that didn't smooth out, and I noticed it fraying at the bottom edge. For $40, I would expect this whole product to be in perfect condition on arrival. However, the heavy and large nature of the item makes me reluctant to pay to return/exchange it. If you can buy one local so you can see it first, I would advise that as the best option. I did order 2 of these (one for my Mom also) and the other one had the same problem with the bubbles near the rubber feet, but the top mat was in better shape.
Despite the quality issues described above, I gave this four stars because I really enjoyed using it. I took advantage of the glass for cutting as well as playing with distress crayons. It cleaned up very nicely. I used the white mat for gluing and that also cleaned easily. I did not use the white glass as a color palate yet. Overall, I liked the size and I think I will really like all the features when I have more time to use them. It's a very heavy piece of glass and you shouldn't have to worry about it moving around your desk. I found that it stayed in place.
As a work surface, I liked the black background for most papers. It was a little difficult when I was working on a black page, but otherwise the paper stood out beautifully.
My overall assessment is that this product is a terrific idea, with room for improvements in product quality and/or packing and shipping. It does ship with protectors on the corners of the glass to prevent breakage. Somehow, the inside small white mat needs to be better protected.
For one I wish they would make a lefty version. Also mine the printing was not the best it was a little bubbly. Also the backing came off of the matt that came with it. Luckly I purchased an extra one. But because it was at a sale price I will be keeping it.
I have a huge craft table but end up using just a small square because of all the stuff I have strewn around me. My habit is to put things back as soon as I use them (scissors, paper cutter, etc.) so I can find them. However, my craft table is full of stamps, gems, glue, stamp pads, different colors of paper, ribbon, etc. that might match and I don't have room to stamp. I bought this thinking it would give me more room to actually work. I've used it about a week now and it works really well! It has small feet, just enough to make things stand around it, not on it. I have enjoyed putting color on the white side and then being able to move the re-inker, twinkling H2O, radiant pearls and etc. out of my work space. This has been making crafting much more fun - because I am no longer squeezed into a tiny space. Yeah! Love this item and am buying one for my friend's birthday.
