This Glass Mat and Media Surface Mat Bundle is designed by Tim Holtz for Tonic Studios. This amazing glass mat has a sleek black finish with a white grid. This media mat is a multi-functional tool for creating and maintaining your workspace. There is a 12" x 14" grid with features for measuring in both imperial and metric measurements to help with the proper alignment of your projects. There is also a mixing palette area (7.5" x 11") that features a durable, easy-to-clean, nonstick mat that is perfect for preparing wet mediums (sold separately). This mat is removable and easy to clean with an anti-slip backing. This mat is perfect for ink blending, stamping, and stenciling. The Glass Media Mat is made from toughened safety glass that is very durable and can be used for on-the-go crafting. The glass mat also features non-slip feet so the mat stays in place. The Glass Media Mat measures 14" x 23". The second product in this bundle is the Media Surface Mat which works perfectly with the Glass Media Mat. This mat measures 13.5" x 23". This mat features reinforced stitched corners and is a heavy-duty, non-stick mat. This mat has a heat-resistant top surface. This mat has a non-slip base surface so your projects will stay where you put them. This mat can be cleaned with soap and water and left to air dry. This mat does contain a protective film which must be removed before use. This Media Surface Mat can then be placed on the Glass Media Mat for all your crafting projects.
I was really excited about this mat and have happily used it for about four months. I recently got companion tool set with the scraper and edge guide. That's when I became disappointed. Because the lines on the mat are not applied straight if you use the two together as they were intended you won't get a straight line.
I emailed Tonic Studios explaining the problem and got the following response:

I find that unacceptable. They were made to work together, yet if you use them together you end up with a flawed project! UGH!!!

This weekend I was able to spend several hours scrapbooking on my new Tim Holtz Glass Media Mat. Upon first inspection I was not that impressed with the quality of the workmanship. The printing is on a sheet that is stuck to the back of the glass and there are bubbles in it, especially around the rubber feet. The glass seems to be sticky around the edges where the printed backing was applied. Also, the white mat that sits on top of the right side was crumpled up, leaving wrinkles that didn't smooth out, and I noticed it fraying at the bottom edge. For $40, I would expect this whole product to be in perfect condition on arrival. However, the heavy and large nature of the item makes me reluctant to pay to return/exchange it. If you can buy one local so you can see it first, I would advise that as the best option. I did order 2 of these (one for my Mom also) and the other one had the same problem with the bubbles near the rubber feet, but the top mat was in better shape.
Despite the quality issues described above, I gave this four stars because I really enjoyed using it. I took advantage of the glass for cutting as well as playing with distress crayons. It cleaned up very nicely. I used the white mat for gluing and that also cleaned easily. I did not use the white glass as a color palate yet. Overall, I liked the size and I think I will really like all the features when I have more time to use them. It's a very heavy piece of glass and you shouldn't have to worry about it moving around your desk. I found that it stayed in place.
As a work surface, I liked the black background for most papers. It was a little difficult when I was working on a black page, but otherwise the paper stood out beautifully.
My overall assessment is that this product is a terrific idea, with room for improvements in product quality and/or packing and shipping. It does ship with protectors on the corners of the glass to prevent breakage. Somehow, the inside small white mat needs to be better protected.

I was elated when I picked up my glass media mat! I was devastated to learn of its faults. First, the grid is totally crooked. Second, the corners of the craft mat are curling up as of day 2. Third, the craft mats cut edges are fraying as of week 2 (note that I haven’t even used the craft mat yet). Fourth, the glass scratches quite easily. This took me by surprise because Tim said specifically that you can cut on this media mat. Well, you can cut on anything pretty much... it’s going to scratch.
With all of that being said, it’s still worth it instead of just a craft mat. Just some things to consider.

I absolutely love this mat! I wanted it as soon as I watched the CHA 2018 with Tim Holtz demonstrating the product! I snatched it up as soon as Scrapbook offered it! The box it came in was large, a bit heavy, but it didn’t disappoint! It was well packaged and my item arrived quite fast.
The mat is all glass with the ruler grid beneath the glass so there is no way the lines/ measurements will fade, disappear, etc. I love the section to the right, you can remove the craft sheet and use your inks in the squares for whatever you like.; mixing distress inks, water coloring etc. Go watch the video Scrapbook has beneath the item page. This is one of the BEST tools Tim Holtz and Tonic have created for crafters!

I love this mat! It is not too big and does not take up that much room because it was made to use to do all your crafts and art!!! As an artist and a crafter I can tell you that it is worth getting. First of all, you can cut on it with the sharpest blades, you can not only work with inks, acrylics, colored pencil, oils, you name it, you can remove the small mat on the left and you have even a larger space for creating larger items. It is tempered glass, which will last for years and years because I have a glass tempered glass table at home that is 30 years old!!! And there are no scratches on it, not one!!! By using glue on only the small mat to the right, it peals right off. After getting used to it, it is so easy to use. Thank you Tim! I have wanted a glass mat like this for a long time!!! It is perfect!!!!!!!!!

For one I wish they would make a lefty version. Also mine the printing was not the best it was a little bubbly. Also the backing came off of the matt that came with it. Luckly I purchased an extra one. But because it was at a sale price I will be keeping it.

I really like this tool. It makes my work surface a bit more tidy as I work. it gives a "border" to the area I have to work in. much nicer to have areas "assigned" to certain areas. the glue area, the creating area. As Tim said it keeps the card making area better controlled and clean. It also encourages me to keep the glue, paint, marker, cutting areas separate and my cards less in danger of getting into the glue or paint or ink. I find I work a bit neater which helps me turn out a better product. I love it.

I will use this Tim Holtz and tonic Studios Matt for years. If I wear it out (I think it would be impossible), I would buy another. I purchased 2 more non stick replacement mat covers because I have a type A personality, and like clean looking Matt. I have covered it with paste, inkr, glue, hot glue, and others mixed media’s, that would have ruined many other matts. That alone is why I had started looking for the perfect matte for me. I just love the Matte, and was the first one in Caldwell, Idaho to get one!!!
You should buy this Matt. You will love it as much as I do and try what you want, you will not hurt it. Thanks to Tim Holtz and tonic Studious for this new product.

I have a huge craft table but end up using just a small square because of all the stuff I have strewn around me. My habit is to put things back as soon as I use them (scissors, paper cutter, etc.) so I can find them. However, my craft table is full of stamps, gems, glue, stamp pads, different colors of paper, ribbon, etc. that might match and I don't have room to stamp. I bought this thinking it would give me more room to actually work. I've used it about a week now and it works really well! It has small feet, just enough to make things stand around it, not on it. I have enjoyed putting color on the white side and then being able to move the re-inker, twinkling H2O, radiant pearls and etc. out of my work space. This has been making crafting much more fun - because I am no longer squeezed into a tiny space. Yeah! Love this item and am buying one for my friend's birthday.

I LOVE IT. Exactly as advertised. It is heavy enough that i feel like i have a solid base for my projects and die cutting machines but not to heavy to move if I need more space. The surface is quite large. Big enough to put my entire 12 x 12 scrapbook page on and still have the side area to work on. It will make my scraping area so much easier to maintain. The little feet on the bottom are just a little bit off the table so i don't feel like i'm working way above my desk surface But I'm not worried about losing items under it. My projects seem to creep in on me too.
it arrived at my overseas location in a week.. Normally it takes 4-6 weeks for packages.

Amazon carries two versions of this mat--the original large one and a large one that is supposed to be "improved" model. The only difference I could see is that the original one is half the price of the improved one. So what's is so improved about the second one that the price doubles?

There is not an improved model. There has not been any changes to this product since it was introduced. Whoever is selling this on Amazon does not know what they are talking about. The USA retail for this item is $39.99. However, you will see higher prices for this if it is "bundled" with other Tim Holtz products. You can use this mat in a variety of ways. The surface is non-stick so adhesives and other mediums wipe of easily. This way you do not have to scrape dried glue, paint etc... off the glass. Additionally, it is heat resistant so you can use your hot glue gun on it. If you are mixing color, doing it on the makes for easier clean up as you can put this under your faucet to wash much easier than the glass mat.

Yes it will come off the glass. If you have Tonic item #2121e, this has a plastic scraper that can take off dried mediums. Regarding the craft mat, on the top of it as it will clean up nicely with light scrubbing
