Adoption Poems for Cards and Scrapbooks
26 Letters Just Not Enough
26 letters is just not enough; oh my I need so many more
I guess I could visit the letter store
I could use digraphs and blends so that I could decree
just how special you are to me
but, I would need much more paper and so much, much more glue, so I hope these 26 letters will have to do!

28 years and 17 days
It has been 28 years and 17 days
since we were last together.
So we held each other so tightly-
never to let go again
You looked at me and I looked at you
seeking confirmation-
after all these years we actually reached
the right destination
We went for a walk and you held my hand
as we crossed a busy road.
My soul and my heart invited you in
hoping that our new life would begin.
And so we embarked on a journey of our own
that would prove best left alone.
Today I look back and remember the day-
the day two worlds collided-
and amongst shattered dreams and broken promises
a picture of blood reunited.

adopted
Although i have a mother who is out there somewhere
I wish she didn't discard me as though she didn't care
At nights i weep tears of sorrow
I pray that there is some hope for tomorrow
And though I now belong
I want to grow up strong
I want to save kids like me
To be the best they can be
I'm not adopted i made this up the way an adopted child may express themselves

ADOPTION
Longing for a child to love,
I'd wish upon the stars above.
In my heart I always knew,
a part of me was meant for you.
I think how happy we will be,
once I adopt you and you adopt me.
I dream of all the joy you'll bring,
imagining even the littlest things.
The way it will feel to hold you tight,
and tuck you in every night.
The drawings on the refrigerator door,
childhood toys across the floor.
The favorite stories read again and again,
hours of games with make-believe friends.
The day you took my outstretched hand,
a journey ended, but our lives began.
Still mesmerized by your sweet face,
still warmed inside by our first embrace.
I promised to give you a happy home,
a loving family all your own.
A house you've now made complete,
with laughter, smiles and tiny feet.
A parent is one who guides the way,
know I will be there everyday.
Rest easy as each night you sleep,
a lifetime of love is yours to keep.

But still miraculously
My own.
Never forget
For a single minute:
You will not grow under my heart
But in it.

Adoption poem
Legacy of an Adopted Child
Author: ????
Once there were two women who never knew each other,
One - you do not remember, the other you call mother.
Two different lives shaped to make yours,
One became your guiding star, the other became your sun.
The first gave you life, and the second taught you to live in it.
The first gave you a need for love and the second was there to give it.
One gave you a nationality; the other gave you a name.
One gave you the seed of talent; the other gave you an aim.
One gave you emotions; the other calmed your fears.
One saw your first sweet smile; the other dried your tears.
One gave you up - that's all she could do.
The other prayed for a child and God led her straight to you.
Now you ask through all your tears the age-old question through the years;
Heredity or environment - which are you a product of?
Neither, my darling - neither - just two different kinds of love.

At last
At last you're adopted,
We waited and all,
We prayed every night,
And then we got the call.
A very sick baby,
Really needs you today,
Can't you come to the hospital,
Please right away.
I got in the car,
And drove to the place,
Where I would meet you,
And kiss your sweet face.
You were so little,
So tiny and so sweet,
I knew in a moment,
You were meant for me.
I rocked you for hours,
You fell asleep in my arms,
I knew then it was my job,
To keep you from harm.
Through sad times and happy,
We've been here for you,
For the rest of your life,
That's what we plan to do.
We are so proud of you,
You are doing so well,
We love you honey,
I hope you can tell!

Before I Knew Your Name
Before I knew your name,
Before I saw your chin and your nose,
Before I counted your fingers and toes,
I asked heaven for someone as wonderful as you,
And ever prayer and wish came true.
I dreamed of you...
Before I knew your name.

before i was a mom
Before I was a Mom I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby.
I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous.
I never thought about immunizations.
Before I was a Mom - I had never been puked on.
Pooped on.
Chewed on.
Peed on.
I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts.
I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom I never held down a screaming child so doctors could do tests.
Or give shots.
I never looked into teary eyes and cried.
I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.
I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put them down.
I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop the hurt.
I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much.
I never knew that I could love someone so much.
I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom - I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body.
I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.
I didn't know that bond between a mother and her child.
I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important and happy.
Before I was a Mom - I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay.
I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom.
I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much before I was a Mom.

A beautiful smile
falls cross your face
When you are happy
or full of grace.
A beautiful smile
fills your eyes,
When you're contented
or surprised.
A beautiful magic
attends your soul,
When you have spoken
of love untold.

We weren't there for your first steps,
but we're here to guide the rest.
We weren't there for your first words,

Cross-Cultural Adoption
I don’t look like my mommy
People have started to say
I don’t look like my mommy
So I asked her why one day
“Some babies are so special,
They come in different ways
Some must wait for their babies
For days and days and days
Some babies come from close by
The Mom who had them could not’t stay
Other Mommies are waiting for them
For a baby they pray and pray and pray
Other babies are born in a far-away land
The mommy who had them no longer there
But some Mommies fly across the sea
A baby’s love to share
You may have a different skin color
Or a different kind of hair
But the love Mommy has for her baby
Will truly always be there
No matter how you or I look
One thing will always be true
You are my precious baby
And I will always love you

Dear Sweet Daughter
Dear Sweet Daughter,
As a girl I had a common dream, to be a mom someday.
My baby would have eyes of blue and hair the hue of hay.
But now my dreams have been transformed. New visions fill my head.
Now the tresses that I long to stroke are raven black instead.
And in my dreams those eyes are not so big or blue or round.
Now in my dreams they're almond shaped and colored cocoa brown.
And in my dreams my arms can stretch across enormous seas.
They reach half-way around the world and hold you close to me.
As you grow in your mother's womb, carefully knit together,
you're also growing in my heart, where you will stay forever.
And in my dreams the moment that your mother says good-bye,
I'll be right there to comfort you and hold you as you cry.
Our features may not look alike; we're different as can be.
But still I know the Father has created you for me.
And though I've not yet seen your face, or held your tiny hands,
and though we're half a world apart in very different lands.
I'll be right there to get you just as soon as God allows.
But til He says the time is right I give to you this vow.
I'll pray for your protection every night on bended knee.
For God will hold you in His arms, until you're here with me.

From the Eyes of an Adopted Child
I am so sick of being the kid, that everyone says, "Your own mom couldn't even love you enough to keep you, I guess I'm not the only one." "Hey, girl, your momma looked at you and couldn't bear the embarrassment of you being her child." It hurts DOES ANYONE UNDERSTAND HOW I FEEL? I tell my "mom" shes not my family, she isn't is she? Everyone else says she isn't. Deep down I love her. Sometimes she makes me mad, still I know she would be the one that would lie down her own life for me. What do i do? ANYONE HEAR MY CRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heaven's Very Special Child
HEAVEN'S VERY SPECIAL CHILD
A meeting was held quite far from Earth!
It's time again for another birth.
Said the Angels to the LORD above,
This Special Child will need much love.
His progress may be very slow,
Accomplishments he may not show.
And he'll require extra care
From the folks he meets down there.
He may not run or laugh or play,
His thoughts may seem quite far away,
In many ways he won't adapt,
And he'll be known as handicapped.
So let's be careful where he's sent,
We want his life to be content.
Please LORD, find the parents who
Will do a special job for you.
They will not realize right away
The leading role they're asked to play,
But with this child sent from above
Comes stronger faith and richer love.
And soon they'll know the privilege given
In caring for their gift from Heaven.
Their precious charge, so meek and mild,
Is HEAVEN'S VERY SPECIAL CHILD.

May you be safe while you're waiting...
May you be safe and sleep soundly through the night
May you be safe as you wake to the morning's light
May you feel our love from so far away,
May it comfort and protect you throughout each day.
We will pray for you my little one,
Until our time of waiting is done.
We will pray that the Lord keep you safe from harm,
Until the child of our hearts becomes the child in our arms.

Maybe
Living life so hopelessly.
Trying to block it out as I walk along.
Nothing really gets to me.
Remembering always to be strong.
Then I realize it's all in vein.
In the end I'll only fail.
There is no way to stop this pain.
Nothings true, it's all a tall tale.
Caring isn't worth the effort.
Trying won't get me anything.
Eventually I'll just end up hurt.
That's all this crazy world will ever bring.
Still I continue to search for more.
I keep going with no clue why.
With hope there will be an open door.
Maybe someday I won't have to cry.

Mother
My heart ached & I felt less then good enough.
She assured me I would conquer the world.
I was angry and bitter.
She wiped my tears.
I blamed her for all my misfortune.
She took it.
She carried my baggage for years & loved me right through it.
All of my accomplishments.
She was there.
She taught me strength.
When I looked in her eyes.
I saw only tenderness.
She picked me up when I felt defeated.
She loved me for me when I couldn't love myself.
I didn't grow under her heart or in it.
I was always there.
She waited for me patiently.
She fought for me.
She is mine.
I was always hers.
She mended my broken wings.
Then set me free for flight.
I am her smile.
She is my heart.
I am her Daughter.
She is my Mother.

My Birthday Wish
Wish I could kiss his little cheek and marvel his smiling face,
Wish I could go back to this day a year ago,
When I let someone else take my place.
But I'm wishing on a star that isn't falling,
Trying to count a blessing that isn't mine,
Hoping God can hear me calling,
When I ask Him for a favor this time.
Can you let him know I love him,
And kiss his little cheek?
Tell him I said Happy Birthday,
And keep me strong on this day,
When I am the most weak?

My Children- Our Family
My Children-My Family.
One of you is my birthday buddy,
Another is my Princess,
Another is my sports fanatic
And the baby is my Bug-A-Boo.
I've held you in my arms when you cried.
I've changed your diapers when you were wet.
I took care of you when you were sick.
I held your hand when it was time for school.
I loved you since before you were mine.
Your smiles light up my day.
Your hugs bring a smile to my face.
I love you Mommy fills me with joy.
To have you in my life is a blessing.
We are a family.
In tears and laughter
Tickles and temper tantrums,
You are a joy to me
I never thought I would do again.
But God works in wonders
And brought you to us
When you needed us most.
We needed you to complete us.
You needed us to give you the love
Comfort, caring and hope
That you needed to have in your life.
We are a family.
A family that loves us all.
A family that will be here for each.
My children-Our Family.
What a wonderful sentence that is.

The Day We Adopted You
If we had it to do over again
Adoption is what we'd choose
We got more than we had hoped for
The day we adopted you
For you have given us more in life
Than we could ever want or need
You made our house into a home
And made our family complete
We love you more than life itself
for all the things you say and do
And if we had it to do over again
You'd be the only one we'd choose.

The Gift of Life
The Gift of Life
I didn't give you the gift of life,
But in my heart I know.
The love I feel is deep and real,
As if it had been so.

No, I didn't give you
The gift of life,
Life gave me the gift of you.

To Nina: So You Can Remember -adapted to protect her privacy
I could
If I wanted
Tell Moma that I won’t go.
I won’t go, I'll say,
To a new house,
To the new place,
To a land I’ve never seen.
I could
If I wanted
Tell them to take someone else --
Someone who has been in this place ever since she was a baby.
She wouldn’t care.
She doesn’t know about the hill down to my babushka’s house
Where the raspberries grow.
Where the apples hang in the trees.
That little girl hasn’t even seen winter in my village
With snow drifting hard against tree trunks,
And the cows breathing puffs like clouds in the air,
Ice on their nose.
The cold so sharp it cuts you.
I could
If I wanted
Stay here
With the “mamas” who’ve been taking care of me,
If they’ll let me stay.
I will live at the detsky dom
With my dress and my shoes
And my red Elmo
And paper so I can write letters
To Moma
Once I learn how to read and write.
If they would let me send them to her.
Or maybe
I’ll live in a tree.
A tree in our hamlet,
if I can walk that far to go back.
The tall birch tree that was small
when Mama was small,
But grew faster than she did.
Now it has branches
And crooks where I can sit
To look down the hillside.
To my babushka’s house,
Through the woods. Down the path.
I’ll pull turnips from the earth, gather eggs from the henhouse
just like I always have done.
I’ll walk to the village for fresh water from the well
and carry it
in wooden buckets with strong shoulders
just like my papa.
He would be proud.
Or
I’ll live with my big brother,
Watching him write
Big words
About things I don’t understand
And about love.
We’ll eat blini for breakfast
Because he likes them.
And no one tells him he can’t.
And when he has to leave for a while
I’ll live with my oldest sister.
I don’t remember where she lives
But I do know she knows I like bananas and apples.
We’ll sleep together with our eyes open
Until they drop shut.
Listening
to the rain on the metal roof
the wind rattling the windows
Waking when the rooster crows
In sunlight.
Koo-kuh-dee-kooooo.
My Moma is sad to leave, too.
She cried when we walked out the door --
And Nadezhda and Nina Washina and even Svetlana cried.
We all cried together.
And they all watched as the car drove away.
Children
My friends of only 10 months
Gazing out the window.
So
Why are we leaving if everyone’s so sad?
And what is there to go to?
Moma says there are mountains
In the new place.
And everyone else says there are toys and nice clothes
and a bedroom of my own.
I don’t need mountains,
Only the one hill.
I don’t need new toys
Only one toy to call my own.
But I know
I need love.
The love of my moma.
Moma says she would miss me
If I stay.
She says how will our family know about the way the
Mushrooms grow in the forest,
If I don’t tell them.
And how will they ever know my favorite Russian songs,
If I don’t sing them.
What you know first stays with you, my moma says.
And she wants me to always remember.
But just in case I forget
I will take a piece of the town wall.
It is older than any of us...all put together.
And I will take a little bag of Russian soil.
I cannot take the sky.
But Moma has told me the moon and stars are the same
where we are going
As the ones I’ve always seen.
She reminds me that she watched and wondered from so many miles away
if I was looking at the same stars as she
As she counted the days till she came for me.
And I’ll try hard to remember the songs,
And the sound of the rooster at dawn,
And how warm the cows’ milk is
When you taste it,
So my family will know
What I knew first.
And so I can remember, too.

the first time my angel smiled at me I gave away my heart

We Prayed for You
We prayed for you -
a child of our own,
to nurture and raise;
we waited for years.
One day you came to us,
but only on loan,
to love and protect
and then let go.
We prayed for you -
Years of ups and downs,
hope and disappointment;
will you stay or will you go?
Finally the news,
our prayers are answered,
a child of our own.
We prayed for you.

We Were So Excited
We were so excited
When we found out about you
We called all of the family
And they got excited too.
Adoption was so scary
It was all so new
What if you didn't like us
Or they didn't follow through.
Now it's time to take you home
You know we're kind of scared
Will we do a very good job?
Are we really that prepared?
No matter what else happens
I know that we'll get through
We'll always do the best we can
Because we really do love you.

Do I cherish your smile
Your precious little hands
Yes, I do!
Do I have everything ready
And most things paid
The patience of Job
Toys and Band Aids
Yes, I do!
Do I dream of the moment
Your face I'll adore
A place at our table
Your crumbs on the floor
Yes I do!
Do I long to be with you
And call you my child
See your perfect room
Become perfectly wild
Yes, I do!
Do I thank God in Heaven
For the gift of an amazing son
See you swimming in our tub
And flashing your cute buns
Yes, I do!

You Are Mine
I did not hear your first breath,
Nor see your first step,
But you are mine.
From our hearts to our home,
With God's love from above,
You are mine.
Once a thought in my mind,
Only God knew the time,
Now you are mine.
